The 2023 NHSCA Wrestling Championships start this week in Virginia Beach, March 24-26. The bracket entries have been up on Floarena for about a week, with many of the best RI wrestlers entered. A quick perusal indicates RI may have the best representation in NE, in quality and maybe even in quantity.

By my count, we have 79 High Schoolers registered, which is an insane amount for Rhode Island. Not sure what the numbers have been in the past but this is extremely impressive. Let me know if I missed anyone but here are the registered athletes. This should be a huge year for RI kids becoming All-Americans!

To me the most amazing part is the number of R.I. wrestlers that are seeded in the top ten for this tournament!!! R.I. wrestling is on the rise!!! I counted 12 seeded wrestlers from 1-9! Good luck to all R.I. wrestlers this weekend!

Pretty good first day for RI, and for NE as a whole at NHSCA. I think RI have 12 quarterfinalists: 4 frosh, 1 soph, 4 juniors, 2 seniors, 1 girl. RI has more frosh and junior quarters than the rest of NE combined; note VT, NH and ME have none in any of these categories. Mass. does have an impressive 7 seniors in quarters. Best all-New England match of the day was in the freshmen division at 106 lbs. where NE 113 champ Peter Rincan of NH lost 9-7 to NE 106 3rd and MA champ Yandel Morales following a scoreless first period and Rincan up 5-2 after the second, in the Round of 32. Morales is in the quarterfinals. Of note NE has three quarterfinalist at 113 in the Senior Division: Conlan, Adams of CT and Schaeublin of MA, and that's with Maine's Blood getting edged 6-5 in the Round of 16. Otherwise NE would have half the remaining wrestlers at that weight. Of course, that's without the NE champ because that was Rincan. Another note: Hayden Myers is in the 132 Senior quarters against top-seeded Tyler Knox of MA, who was NE champ at 126 in 2022 when Myers finished third. Knox is still at St. Johns Prep but didn't wrestle high school in NE this season, instead winning two national-level tournaments: Beast of the East and the Doc Buchanan in California, and I believe he won a NE college tournament in January.

Here's my unofficial count at nhsca nats.
72 high school competitors notched 131 wins 9AA
18 Frosh = 28 wins 3AA 14 Soph = 26 wins 1AA 23 Jr. = 52 wins 3AA 13 SR. = 20 wins 1AA 4 HS Girls = 5 1AA
I tried to catch as many of our guys and girls as possible. Every single wrestler that stepped out on the mat did RI proud. Congratulations to everyone. Back to practice we go

All-in-all a very good showing by RI wrestlers with 9 AAs (15 counting Middle School), including one champion who, unsurprisingly, was Gabriel Bouyssou at 138 Juniors. Gabe really dominated his division, including lopsided wins over two multi-time Utah State champions in the semifinals and finals. His main opposition was supposed to be NY Div 1 State champ Caden Bellis but Bellis was upset by Robison of Utah in the quarters, who Gabe beat by Technical Fall in the finals. He actually got better near the tournament's end: F, MD, 7-3, 9-2, Fall (up 14-3), TF. There were many other notable performances from the RI team. David Perez tore through the 120 frosh class to the finals where he fell 16-2 to Pennsylvania 2A runner-up Brandt Harer. To paraphrase Kurt Gowdy, "his future is ahead of him!" You may need to Google Kurt Gowdy. Spencer Fine had a terrific tourney in the 182 juniors, including a quarterfinal win over an undefeated Illinois 6A champ before losing 5-3 to Ayden Flores who was a Kansas state champ at - this is not a misprint - 215 lbs (who ironically lost to the Georgia 1A runner-up at 215 in the finals)! Spencer claimed third with an exciting 11-10 over Lane Kiser, the Kentucky runner-up at 190 (I didn't see video of the match; I'm just assuming any match that ends 11-10 was exciting). Also at Juniors Isael Perez also made it to the semifinals in the 170 class before finishing in 6th place in the class won handily by two-time New England champ Nate Blanchette of Massachusetts. Preston Marchesseault too made it to the quarters, in soph 170 lbs., before his first loss but then rallied to fifth place. He has such a tremendous upside but it will be interesting to see how high he gets to raise it next season since Fine, Perez and Blanchette will all be back and all around his weight. Maybe the best RI performance aside from Bouyssou was Hayden Myers, even though finishing fourth at 132 Seniors. Hayden ran afoul of the indomitable Tyler Knox of St. Johns Prep, MA, who was NE champ last season at 126 where Hayden was third. Myers took a decisive 10-0 loss to Knox in the quarters, but Knox handled everyone that way. In six matches at NHSCA no one scored a point on him: no escapes, no stalls, no penalties. Hayden fought back with three straight wins, including a 3-1 SV over Kansas 6A 138 champ Cael Alderman in the consi semis, before dropping a 5-2 decision for third to Florida 3A 132 runner-up Danny Martinez. He was the only RI AA in the Seniors division. Frosh Joseph Joyce had a number of big wins and a few close losses at 132 on his way to a 6th place finish. He breezed to the quarterfinals where he dropped a tight 2-1 decision to the eventual runner-up, then won consecutive matches by 3-2 scores before dropping 8-6 and 3-2 decisions in the placement matches. And it seems a regular occurrence now for RI to come up with new young big men each year at States and at NHSCAs, with Kaz Morossetti continuing that tradition. The NK frosh followed-up his 5th place at 220 in RI States with an 8th place at NHSCA, making it to the quarters where he lost to eventual champion Mocco of Florida. Of the RI HS quarterfinalists who didn't place, Colby Vital, Peyton Ellis and Ryan Conlan all lost in the Blood Round. On the distaff side four female RI wrestlers entered the girls division, with Norah Swaim finishing 4th at 114. She won her first three matches to get to the semifinals where she lost to eventual champ and fellow NE wrestling legatee Calli Gilchrist of Norwalk, CT whom I assume is related to the Gilchrist brothers who just won Connecticut State titles and NE 1st and 6th. Finally, among 12 Middle School entrants from RI there were 6 placers, led by Kayson Kong runner-up finish at 230, losing only to champion Caleb Tyler of PA who also handed Joe Vitolo his only loss on the way to a 3rd place finish at 230. Other MS placewinners were: Chace Armstrong and Samuel Floody, 6th and 7th at 75 lbs; Robert Douangmala, 5th at 112; and Logan Barry, 7th at 80 lbs. New England wrestlers as a whole did very well. I'm not sure that the numbers quite matched last year, in part I think because of what seemed to be greater attendance this year and I believe better talent showing up. Still, NE had five NHSCA National Champions! Besides Gabe, Knox and Blanchett, Thomas Brown of Chelmsford, MA blew through the Sophomore 285 lb. class and Raekwon Shabazz of Xavier, CT tore up the Junior 106 class. All but Knox with be back in NE competition next season, unless a top prep school program snags one or more of them (as Northfield Mt. Hermon did of 2022 106 champ Musa Tamaradze. It's unlikely that any of these returning national champs will wind up in the same weight classes (though 182 could see 4 AAs at NE Championships) so the region should be formidable next season overall. On the other hand, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont had no HS AAs at NHSCA this time, so they need to build back up some of their recently formidable programs (Mt. Anthony, Timberlane, maybe Massapequa, among others) for New England wrestling to remain strong and grow stronger. As a followup, Morales of MA beast Rincan of NH again in the frosh 106 consolation and so knocked him out of placing while Morales took sixth. Here's the link for the entire tournament with all divisions on Floarena. It's a lot to get through but it's worth it. arena.flowrestling.org/event/2bb9ece2-c45a-4b82-828b-b2a3d5bb8f2e
