Sectionals looks to be a very entertaining tournamnet with many weight classes being very competitive.
As is the case in Div 1, a few weight classes have very clear front runners.
If we go by the logic that Pono, Coventry, Hope, BH, EP, Cumberland, NP, and Cranston West are all competing for top 5 and top 10 at states and New England's, than we also have to consider that Div 2/3 will not be shut out in the Top 10 and 1 school (Central) could break the top 5.
The way seeidng plays out will potentially see Semi-Finals matches and consi finals matches will have ripple effects on the team races and by default points at New England's for teams.
Hope, Pono, and BH are all in some dog fights in a few weight classes and results of sectionals will have a very big impact on that.
Sectional top 5 teams
Central
Lincoln
Tollgate
Narragansett
Mt. Pleasant
Middletown, Pilgrim, and Woonsocket all have had really good seasons but their respective strengths run into to many challenges from the teams above.
106
Robert Newton Fr. (Scit)
Delaila Calderon (JS)
Jack Sabatelli (TG)
Jordan Lally (EG)
*Teams impacted states: BH, EP, Cumberland, NK.
Newton (Scit) is the clear #1 for D2/D3. Sabatelli (TG) has had a lot more exposure than Caleron(JS) and Lally(EG) .
Newton will be very competitive and can't be overlooked. He does hold a win over Hughs(NK) and has losses to Hulkow(BH) 3-1, and Soe(Fall). Newtown has been on the big stage out of state at Tulsa and Reno.
113
Zach Henault Sr. (Linc)
Isaiah Garcia Fr. (Cent)
Jacob Olivera (Pilgrim)
*Impacted teams at States: NP, Hope
Henault (Linc) is the returning Sectional champ. Also putting together a nice tournamnet season taking 1st at South County and placing in each tournament he attended.
113 has sharks all over D1, perhaps none more dangerous then Hood (Pono), Conlan (LSA), Hiraldo (Hope) and Soe (NP). Henault does have a loss to Soe.
Garcia (Central) will be in the mix with Olivera (Pilgrim) for a spot in the Sectional finals. Both young wrestlers that will make an impact on the state level next season.
120
Logan Martins So. (John)
Max Connell (Mtown)
Eric Toj-Sam (Mt Pleasent)
RI is very tough at this weight. Seeding is not going to be a strategic opportunity because where ever you look there is a guy with a national resume waiting for you. This is also the case in D2/3. Martins(John) is will likly be have success at Sectionals. What's to be determined is Does Mooney (Lincoln) drop to 120 or go 126 or 132. Mooney has had great matches against the division. Max Connell (MTown) is establishing himself as a wrestler to watch and Eric Toj-Sam (MtP) is possibly the most under the radar wrestler in the state along side his teammate at 132. It's a shame RI only gets 3 qualifiers to New England's. Currently 3 are highly ranked and I personally believe 2 more should be.
126
John Kaminski Sr. (EWG)
Ben White (SK)
Edwin Mooney (Lincoln)
Yandel Francisco Vichez (Central)
JaVari Sanchez (Mt Pleasent)
Cash Treklinsky (Narragansett)
Teams impacted in States race: Hope, BH
Take your pick. Kaminski (EWG) win and loss to White(SK). White (SK) lost to Mooney (Lincoln). Mooney lost to Treklinsky (Narr), Treklinsky lost to Sanchez (MtP) Sanchez lost to Vinchez (Central). Vinchez lost to White.
Kaminski and White have more wins against the field but Mooney has been going up and down. No credibility can be given to a prediction bc this group is loaded.
While Hope and BH have the most to lose in this weight class, they could also blow that statement out of the water bc McGrew (BH) and Pompey (Hope) wouldn't surprise anyone if they qualified for New England's.
132
Ivan Mazariego (Central)
Lucas Patten (Pilgrim)
Alex Borzell (Smithfield)
*Teams impacted on States race: Pono and Hope
Mazariego (Central) will likely take the 1 seed for D2/3 his reward will be Swaim (NK). Leischner ( Pono) and Montanez (Hope) on his side of the bracket. Swaim does have a Maj in hand but a NP tournament matcup for Ivan and Leischner (pono) didn't happen. This is another weight class that is highly ranked in New England.
138
Eneas Castillo (CE)
Kamal Dib (Lincoln)
Apollo hernandez (Central)
*Impact - CW, NK, Coventry, Hope
Castillo (CE) & Dib (Lincoln) will be fighting for the top of Sectionas. Hernandez (Central) is having a nice season as is Arandia (MtP). Castillo has the most likly chance of breaking through to the top 3. He will have to overcome a likly very tough road with Montero (hope) Shartner (NK) and Armstrong (Coventry). The one critical aspect of Eneas season is the lack of competition. Cranston East dosnt travel much for starters and had a tournament cancelled on them in Smithfield. If the Cam Ice (#4 New England) match at the Methuen Invitational was any indication of what to expect with Castillo (a loss by takedown with 9 seconds to go) then no one should be taking him lightly. A semi-finals match agaisnt Montero (Hope) will be on of the top must see matches prior to the finals.
145
Gabriel Bouyssou Jr. (Scit)
Aziz Mian So. (Cent)
*Impact on States team race: Considerable!
BH, MtH, Coventry, NP,
Gabe will be on the lower side of the bracket meaning Vital (BH) or Futardo (MtH) will have the 1 on top setting up a semi-finals with Mian (Central). This weight class has a legitimate chance of being a D2 vs D3 finals.
152
Ray McConnell- Narragansett
John Nicol - Lincoln
Jovan Padilla (JS)
*Impact on States team race: MtH, CW, Cumberland, NP
McConnell has the most success of the D2/3 lot. Padilla has 2 loses on the year. One to McConnell in a very entertaining match and the other to Montefusco (CW) by fall in the 2nd. Nicol is coming on strong as of late and we didn't see McConnell vs Nicol due to an injury but we should see it at sectionals. This will be a tough weight class to break into the top 3 but McConnell has the ability. He would need to over come a rematch in the quarter finals match up with Currier (Char) whom won the first match 4-0. Montefusco will be waiting in the Semi-Finals eager to get his own rematch on Hood (Pono) how beat him 8-4.
160
Connor Winfield - Narragansett
Dylan Martin - Johnston
Yuilcal Perez - Cent
Trevor Martins - (Classical)
*Impact on States team race- BH, CW, Cumberland, EP
160 is the rear weight class that has notable presence in the rankings. Winfield(Narr) holds dec wins over Perez (Central) 7-2 , Martin (Johnston) 4- 2 and Martins (Classical) 9-2.
Connor will have the the top seed on the lower side of the Sectional bracket and Yuilcal will have the top seed setting up a Martin (Johnston) matchup in the Semi-Finals. The winner at sectionals will not be rewarded all that much as
Andrew Reall (Pono) takes the top seed on top pushing Cambell(BH) to the lower side but the field is still loaded after that. Pope (EP) Dillan (Cumberland) Pappas (CW) Young (NK) Wall (CE) to name a few others who could play underdog.
170
Oliver Parker - (CF)
Tyler Hunter - (TG)
Jack Gianneto- (Narragansett)
Donavan Watts - (Pilgrim)
*Impact on States team race- BH, Hope, Pono,
Is this the deepest weight class in the state? It appears to be. Lots of 1st places finishes at variours tournmanets throughout the region and currently 2, 3, 4 ranked in New England.
At sectionals the biggest match to look for will be a likly rematch between Parker (CF) and Hunter (TG). Oliver winning the first match by fall at the South County tournament. Hunter has had considerable success since, but so has Parker. Oliver is undefeated this season with some very notable names on his resume. The winner at sectionals will be able to avoid Perez(Hope) until the finals. All that means is Baccala (Pono) and Scalma(BH) are on that side. Parker does hold a fall over Baccala, and 3-2 dec over Scalma. The field will still be even more complex with Riveria (Central) who has improved every time out, Watts (Pilgrim) who has a tournament title under his belt, and Gianneto (Narr) who is wrestling his natural weight and looks all the stronger with out the cut, add in Rooney (NK), and Mendiola (Westerly) and you can see why this may be the deepest division. The biggest wildcard will be with Tyler Hunter. He did certify at 160 and could drop down for sectionals.
182
Colin Morgan- Narra
Nasir Brotka - Cent
Trevor O'Connor- Pilgrim
*Impact on States team race- Very hard to see any of these guys knocking off Fine (BH) or Preston (Pono). It's also going to be very hard for any of these 3 to make top 3 at states. Morgan(Narr) did have Herrera (Barr) on his back at Griswald prior to getting reversed and pinned. Even if Herrera is out of the picture, Amaral (EP) is looking very good. While top 3 will be difficult it's not hard to see these guys going 4,5,6
195
Ben Wilcox So. (Woon)
Alec Bolduc- (Lincoln)
Djovani Jean-Pierre - (JS)
*Teams impacted on States race: BH
Ben Wilcox(Woon) is the clear #1 in D2/D3. He does present significant issues for Tavaras (Hope) and Raposa (Cumberland). His biggest weakness will be his greatest advantage. He is the youngest of the of group that will likly be on the podium.
220
Logan Reiner Sr. (SK)
Winston Kallon Jr. (Mt. Pleasant)
Caleb Florendo Jr. (Midl)
Andrew Arsenault- (Pilgrim)
*Impact on States team race- 220 presents more issues for d1 schools the same way 145 and 170 do. With Reiner being the most likely #1 seed to come out of sectionals, it sets up a probable match with Diorio (Pono) in the semis. While Diorio had his hands full with Alchihed (CW), Reiner had a very fast match in the finals of South County. With a mostly unknown in Winston Kallon (MtP)
You could make a case for his match at South County against Alchihed (cw) as an unknown in trying to pick a winner in that potential rematch. Kallon was winning the match prior to the loss of control and getting pinned. Alchihed has that gritty style with lots of pressure that forces his opponents into bad spots wear he can capitalize. Kallon does stand a chance against Diorio and Alchihed. 220 is the other weight class that could see an all D2/d3 finals. If that is the case a rematch with Diorio and Alchihed will have alot of noise. The first match was very rough on both wrestlers and arguments can be made for back points in one part and 2 points at the buzzer.
285
Alex Herrera Jr. (Woon)
Greg Hopkins So. (SK)
William Emery Sr. (EWG)
Issa Ghazal - (Lincoln)
D2/D3 will have plenty of representation on the podium at states. It's just a tough case to make thinking they will be standing over Church (BH), Marvelli (Barrington), or Jones (Coventry). Herrera (Woon) does stand the best chance.
As is the case in Div 1, a few weight classes have very clear front runners.
