Always a good early season opener for RI wrestling with all the teams from the South County area, some noteworthy Division II and III teams, and whomever Hendricken deigns to send. Cranston West with frontline strength (7 placers in top 3) edged Central which had considerable depth (8 placewinners). North Kingstown was a solid third with Hendricken fourth followed by Lincoln, South Kingstown, Chariho, West Warwick and Toll Gate in a large 23 team field. Some interesting results, with the 14 champs widely spread among 10 teams. Champion CW had only one titlist, a dominant Cam Davis at 120, but five finalists. Central is showing the benefits of the formidable Beat the Streets program and may well be a factor in 2023 states. NK still has plenty of talent, and BH always enters a young team but this year had mostly frosh entries with all scoring and most placing in top 8. It was good to see several programs that had been less successful in recent years show some improvement with place-winners, including Narraganset, Tolman, Mt. Pleasant, and particularly Central Falls/Blackstone Valley Prep with champ Oliver Parker at 170. Also note the return to wrestling of Middletown/Rogers/Portsmouth with two placers.
