North Providence Was FUN!!!!

106 William Soe (NP) dominant, Mikhail Hulkow (Hendi) and Robby Newton ( Scituate, MQ) Legit!!

113 Micha Soe (NP) and Zachary Henault (Linc) taking 2nd and 4th against some solid comp!!!!

120 Davis (CW) should have been allowed to wrestle, coaches voted !!!!! Early- Season Tourney!!!!! Martin’s (Johnston) represented in the finals!!!!

126 David Perez(Pono, MQ) ran through a solid bracket, beating Mcgrew (Hendi) in the semis 8-0 but it was a good battle closer than the score indicated, then beating the SJP Kid 7-1!!!! Hulk !!!

132 Leischner(Pono) redeemed himself, we wanted to see a Billy vs Ivan final but Billy won 6-1 over the SJP kid who bested Ivan in a close won!!!

138 Joseph Joyce (Pono) was well, as good as advertised pinning the #5 in the NE rankings in the Semi’s and catching the 3rd in Mass All-States last year, in a back bridge for a defensive pin as the crowd erupted in the finals!!

145 Gabe (Scituate, MQ) was Gabe esque and completely dominate, kid is like his namesake a heavenly force amongst mere mortals! It is impressive!!!

152 Montefusco CW, MQ) was head and shoulders above the comp at 152!!!

160 Iwanacki( SJP) choked out an unsuspecting opponent in the finals maybe he was upset that Pono’s infant trio had a clean sweep at 126,132 and 138 over SJP kids!!

170 Awesome battle between BVP wreslter Parker and Baccala(Pono), up 3-0 Baccala got thrown and pinned by the StalWart Greco Wrestler from MASS! Sclama is Huge!!!!!!!

182 Hosey( NP) and Brotka (Central) represented!!!

195 Colossal Battle of RI guys at  between Sophomore Freak Wilcox (Woon) and O’Connor(Pilg) with Wilcox prevailing with a pin while trailing in a tight one!!

220 ​​Andrew Alchihed (CW)prevailed a hotly contested 220 weight bracket!!

285 Joey Church (Hendi) losing a close one to SJP at Heavy!!!!


Team Notes North Providence always solid also beat Mt. Hope last week!!!
Central impressive!!!! Yes SJP won but all three head to heads with Pono were losses and that’s without Hood, Hood, Jake Joyce, Reall, Diorio, and Marchessault in the tourney!! Pono’s babies delivered a top 5 Finish!!!

RI wrestling is on fire with many great matches to come!!!!

Huge Shout-Out to long time NP coach Rich Torti and the NP Staff for putting on a great early season tournament!!!! Bringing in Salem a perennial NH power and defending NE Champs SJP from Mass, coupled with the star power of kids like Gabe Boyossou, the Pono Youth movement, Central’s Studs and the quality of teams like CW, NP, Hendi, Scituate, and Lincoln made for an awesome Tourney!!! As a fan it was fun to watch!!!

Why couldn't Davis wrestle?

Rumor as it after the coaches voted to let him wrestle - he missed weight but then went to bathroom and made weight - one of the coaches who voted no in the vote, called the league. I wasn't told who said no in the vote, but must be someone who has beef with either CW Coach or Davis. Sounds like a poor sport to me.

Instead of spreading rumors I can tell you from a first-hand account that it was not any coach that called the league about the issue. Instead of further spreading an incorrect rumor I would advise you to call the RIIL and ask the interscholastic league for a comment about the matter. The last thing we need in this league is resentment and animosity to our other teams, especially if it's based on a rumor that is wrong.

North providence tourney was a huge success. A lot of things to be happy about

Saint johns Prep 1st
Salem 2nd
North Providence 3rd
Central 4th
Ponagansett 5th



Ponogansett even without there full lineup did amazing. David Perez winning 1st at 126, leichner taking home 1st, Joyce pinning the Saint John Prep kid. Baccala with tough comp from Parker but otherwise Pono’s team is stacked

Central very surprising with there success this year Aziz mian teched his way to finals and lost to gabe (not surprising) Yuilcal Cruz with 2nd also. Ivan mazadigo very sad to not see the match with him and Leischner and the 182 Brotka losing in finals. Absolute studs this year would love to see central do something big at states


Cranston west sad to see that Cam didn’t make weight he would’ve definitely token the tourney. Montefusco getting 1st definitely seeing some good matches at states with the both of them


North providence Will and Micah soe will getting 1st Micah getting 2nd from some good comp. Wouldn’t be surprised seeing both of them in the finals this year.


Scituate team is also getting pretty good obviously you have gabe at 145 but definitely came a long way


Hendrickens team also stacked sclama getting 3rd also with vital. 2 finalists definitely gonna do good at stent this year.

Overall North providence tournament was a huge success
