Wrestlers to watch this upcoming season and their assumed weight classes starting with returning NE Place finishers and last years RI podium finishers!
First and foremost, I am sure there are kids I missed, or I have not mentioned, all the eighth graders coming up, kids who have put a ton of work in and made huge gains over the past year, so feel free to add names if you know of someone I missed. I started this by saying these are the preseason favorites, kids that have already placed or made a name for themselves! I am sure there will be kids that emerge, and there will be upsets galore, like always!
106 Unsure
113 Ryan Conlan Lasalle will be at 113 this year; the state’s runner-up and returning NE place finisher (6th) will be joined by RI returning champ Jared Hood Ponaganset who bested Conlan twice last year, even though Conlan placed at NE’s and Hood did not.
120 Peyton Ellis Coventry, who took 3rd last year at NE, may go 120 this year or 126., He went 120 at Journeyman and finished 5th, losing only to nationally ranked Deluca! Returning 6th in NE, Cam Davis may be here or at 126, so the returning state placer will look to challenge here for a title! Watch out for Ponaganset Freshman David Perez, who is a 2X Middle School NE Runner-Up and also had a good showing at Journeymen.
126 Jacob Joyce Ponaganset returning NE Champ who just recently placed at Super 32, only the second wrestler in RI History to do so, the other being Joziah Fry. Joyce is currently ranked #13 in the country on both Flo and Matscouts. Stone Farnsworth is a returning State runner-up looking to challenge Joyce for the top spot. Mt Hope has a strong title contender in Andrew Mcarthy though he may opt to go 120/132 if Swaim and Myers are at 138! Mooney from Lincoln had a solid season last year and is starting to try his hand on the national scene and looking to challenge as well.
132, I see Connor Swaim NK possibly making the drop to 132. He would have a great shot at a title, Sebastion Armstrong, or returning NE 3rd and 2X RI Champ Myers, will be here from Coventry; if Myers goes 132, it's his to lose; chances are he will already be committed by the start of the season does he make the drop or not? Ponaganset William Leischner will be here as well, though he had what some think was a disappointing state meet; the Freshman had two quality losses; keep in mind this kid is young, still 14 years old as a sophomore, and he should rebound to challenge!
138 Is interesting. Coventry is again crowded in the middle. Does Myers go 138 or 132? If Swaim NK goes 138, and Myers doesn’t make the drop, and you throw in Freshman Joe Joyce from Ponaganset, this gets very interesting. We are, of course, assuming Boyoussou goes 145! Myers is the favorite here, but Swaim has been looking solid on the national stage Joyce took 3rd at NHSCA, beating Camden Baum, PA, who just blood-rounded at Super 32 HS.
145 Gabe Boyoussou, New England Champion, 4X Fargo AA, and National Greco Champ, should be here. Gabe is currently ranked #20 on Flo at 138 but will be ranked higher at the end of the season at 145; It will be interesting to see if the vastly improved Drew Currier from Chariho goes to 145, drops to 138, or goes up to 152 same with longtime club teammate Luke Lagasse. It will also be interesting to see if Jason Hood returning NE 4th, goes 145 or 152; he has gotten quite a bit taller I believe he will go 152; Edmir Monteiro also has a viable shot here in what may be a loaded weight class.
152 With Hood Ponaganset 4th in NE, Montefusco CW, and Pacheco Mt. Hope all possibly going 152; this weight should be fun to watch; I guess we will have to see where everyone certifies! It is still very much up in the air. We could see a mass exodus from 145 to 152 to avoid Gabe.
160 Andrew Reall Ponaganset just had an awesome journeyman knocking off a ranked Fargo AA, an HM, and a Fargo National Champ. Does Perez from Mt Hope make the drop to wrestle him here, or does Pacheco move up to battle the emerging Junior? I believe Campbell is back for Hendricken as well. Time will tell,
170 I think Perez from Hope finds his home here at 170. He will avoid a loaded 182 bracket not because he can’t win it, he could, but because his teammate will be there along with another strong group of kids, Baccala from Ponaganset will challenge him here as well.
182 is loaded, Fine Hendricken, Marchesseault Ponaganset, and returning champ Taveras Hope. I see Taveras possibly going up to 195, grabbing a title, and letting these two studs battle it out!
195 If Taveras goes up, he will be challenged by Cumberland’s Shane Reposa, who just competed at Journeyman at 195; this would be a great final; Reposa has improved quite a bit over the last year, and is just a junior, I believe!
220 Not sure if Corbin Maria Chariho graduated; I do not believe he did. Would he compete at 195 or 220? I know that Lasalle transfer Dorio is at Ponaganset and has been working hard and wrestling in a number of national tournaments this past summer and fall!
285 lots of the top graduated Coventry Ason Jones would seem to be the favorite here; not sure if Juanita Sanchez heavyweight R'Cardo Smith-Selguedo graduated or not, if not he and Jones would be the odds on preseason favorites to meet in the finals!
