It looked like a pretty efficient tournament run on Feb. 12 at Coventry High for the RIIL JV and Freshmen wrestling championships. Still seemed a little underpopulated compared to previous years, but better than last June and pretty good for a season still stunted by Covid. Top teams in each class were a little surprising to me: LaSalle, Central and East Providence went 1-2-3 in the frosh tourney, while Hendricken, Cranston West and Coventry led the junior varsity results. I think the LS and Central results show the continuing success of the Beat the Streets program in Providence and the the city middle school programs. Also both schools depended heavily on freshmen contributors during the varsity dual meet season. Hendricken and Coventry seldom do that much on the jv side but both teams had depth in places where not every good wrestler could squeeze into the lineup. Witness former State placers Armstrong of Coventry and Dellefemine of BH both taking jv titles eight months later.
There was no combined team score for both categories as had been calculated in some of the past years. I put together a simple metric of adding up the team place for both classes as a way of seeing which teams seem to be positioning themselves for good representation next year, pending returning starters, growth and about a thousand other factors. And of course it's not weighted for number of placewinners or participants. Top finishers on this basis are:
1. Cranston West (7)
2. East Providence (8)
3. Bishop Hendricken (9)
4. Cumberland (11)
5. Coventry (12)
6. Central (13)
7. North Providence (16)
8. Narragansett (18)
9. Scituate (22)
10. Barrington (26)
11. Hope/Burrillville/North Kingstown (27)
