Good showing by the Hawks, who finished third in the team competition, and for Gabriel Bouyssou, who won against tough opposition on January 22 in Middletown, CT. The tournament was won by Connecticut No. 1 team Xavier followed by No. 4 Simsbury and BH close behind, ahead of No. 10 Guilford and No. 11 Trumbull. The thing with this tournament is it is REALLY difficult to know who won what and where they placed, since rather than regular brackets the format sets up four Round Robins of 3-4 wrestlers each with the winners advanced to the "true" 4 man bracket to determine places 1-4, while the four runners-up go to another 4 man bracket to determine . . . 5th and 6th? (there is no "3rd" place match in that bracket). Gad, I had forgotten about this format, which wasn't run last year of course. To give you an idea how hard it is to sort out, both Floarena and Connecticut Wrestling Online had errors in their final placings for this tourney. If you are playing along at home, for each weightclass look at each RR Pool A-D results, track the four winners under the "Championship" dropdown bracket for the true (I think) 1st through 4th placers, then if you have any energy left you can track the 4 RR runners-up under "Consolation" for what are apparently the 5th and 6th finishers. Don't worry, I've done the heavy lifting for RI results.
I know that Hendricken had champs in McGrew at 106, Fine at 170 and Betancur at 285, with Mead 2nd at 195 and Shields, N. Sclama, C. Sclama and Church all "5th." McGrew's title comes with a bit of an asterisk since CT Open #2 ranked 106 pounder Shabazz of Xavier suffered one loss by disqualification in his RR which dropped him into the consolation bracket where he pinned to 5th. McGrew went on to pin CT Class L No. 2 Finn of Simsbury in the finals and had pins in all of his contested matches. Neither Fine nor Betancur had particularly noteworthy Connecticut opposition, while Mead was pinned by CT No. 2 Murphy of Guilford in the finals. Noah Sclama lost to CT No. 3 Carpenter in his RR then won the Consolation bracket.
Gabe was Scituate's only champ, with a 7-0 defeat of CT No. 2 ranked Levesque of Xavier in the semi-finals, then a 21-5 technical fall over CT HM Grabinski of Trumbull in the finals. I'm guessing that was more time he spent on the mat than his entire RI season to date. It's good he got the work in. BTW, No. 1 in CT at 138 is NE Champ Kai O'Dell of Danbury. For comparison O'Dell beat Levesque 13-4 in a dual meet. Scituate had another placer in Shawn Cole, who finished true 4th at 145.
There were a number of potential New England finalists and placers in this tournament. Check out the recent New England rankings from Max Schwartz on Connecticut Wrestling Online. Bouyssou, Betancur, Jackson Heslin (113-Xavier), John Mairano (145-Simsbury), Michael Bablola (160-Xavieran, MA), Chris Murphy (195-Guilford) and Thomas Lunt (220-Xavier) were all winners at Colter Abely and are all ranked 1 or 2 in NE. Plus 2nd ranked Zachary Johns of Simsbury who had to default in his 152 RR. That's an amazing amount of talent in one midseason tournament. Others like Fine, McGrew and Mead of Hendricken, Sayers 113-Xaverian, Barrella-113 and Blaha-120 Ridgefield, C. Finn-132 and C. Mairano of Simsbury, K. Levesque-113, D. Levesque-138, Ferucci-145, and Moynihan-182 all of Xavier, Barlage-160 and Strand-182 Guilford, and Cylwik-220 Trumbull are all ranked in the NE Top 10.
