Season starts next week - will be nice to have a full season again.
Who’s doing rankings this year? I’d prefer not to do it since I’m coaching again this year and don’t want it to be a distraction but think it’s time we got the ball rolling (when I used to do it in 2017 / 2018 I would just start with prior year state placers minus seniors and go from there as the season went on).
If FunkMaster (again, no relation despite similar names) is willing to do it again I think he’s done a nice job in the past, or maybe someone new wants to step up?
I think getting some preliminary rankings up will be a good way to kick off some discussion for the season since most of the discussion usually ends up taking place in this thread.

Hello! I will be doing them this year! Anyones welcome to get some preliminary talks going but I usually wait till some action has gone down officially to see who’s going what weights for the most accurate placements!

I am super happy that these kids get to have a season. I am looking forward to a great year for all our R.I. Wrestlers. Our state is small but our kids have really been stepping it up at the national level. There will be some fantastic head to head matches. We also have some very solid freshmen coming in this season and next. Good luck to every R.I. Wrestler this season and I look forward to watching how well our R.I. kids do in the post season this year!

Team Race
Dual Meet Team Rankings
Coventry Ponaganset/ Mt. Hope Cumberland/Hope/ Cranston West North Kingstown
Tournament Team Race
Ponaganset/Coventry Mt Hope Hope
Ponaganset has seven potential finalists in Jared Hood, Joyce, Freshman Leischner, Jason Hood, Reall, Justin Hood, and Baccala and 1 or 2 more scorers at States, but the team is thin, a tough schedule may leave them short-handed come March, when you add another Joyce (This one is a Freak of Nature) to this line-up next year they could grab another NE title!
I see Coventry possibly beating them in a dual and giving them all they can handle at States are Coventry's Horses strong enough to take out Ponaganset's Studs come tourney time? Coventry picks up transfer Farnsworth, but they are crowded in the middle trying to fit Lagasse, Myers, Armstrong, and Farnsworth into the line-up. Don't sleep on Rutherford, and Vesey is back as well! A potent team, Ellis, Farnsworth, Myers, Lagasse, Armstrong, Robichaud, Rutherford, and Vesey.
I also see Mt Hope beating either of the above in a dual, but I don't think they have the guns to repeat at States this year!
Hope has five or six potential placers with three potential finalists!

We are exiting a golden era in RI wrestling. I think the largest number of high-caliber wrestlers grouped over a three-year period in quite some time, and many of them in their first and second years of college and already succeeding at the next level. When they were in high school, there were heated debates on this forum over who was the best p4p among them!!
I am not going to argue with anyone about this, and you can put them in any order you wish; I can't remember when Rhode Island had three wrestlers who were as dominant as Bouyssou, Joyce, and Betancur at the national level!!!
Joyce a Junior, is Currently Ranked #17@120 on Flo, #11 on the The Open Mat, #22 on Rokfin, and #19@120 on Wrestling USA All-Class Rankings. He is the #90 overall class of 2023 on Rokfin Mat Scouts. He has wins over four Nationally ranked wrestlers this year, and six fargo AA's including a 7-1 win over Fargo Runner- up Frothinger. Outside of his loss to Myers( NHSCA AA, Fargo Blood ROUND) at States, his only losses were to top 10 nationally ranked wrestlers, and they were close, including a nail biter against Ohio State commit and Super 32 Champ #3 Kilkeary! He beat #11 Corday, #16 Heethius, and recently #18 double Fargo AA Gorman. Recent losses to #4 Montanona, #7 Oyoub, and #10 Knox. Joyce recently committed to Stanford, I think that a RI wrestler in the PAC-12 may be a first for the state.
Bouyssou a Sophomore, has been nothing short of phenomenal, a double Fargo AA as a FRESHMAN let me say that again FRESHMAN! He enters his Sophomore campaign by beating number #14 on Flo and Penn commit Wasilewski, Princeton commit, and NJ placer Joe Davi and took Virginia commit and #4 in the country Gioffre to the edge in a close one at Super 32!!! He recently took second at the kickoff classic, losing only to the excellent Evanitsky from PA, and took 2nd at Pre Season Nationals, losing to fellow Fargo AA McClure in the finals after beating Ohio Runner-up Ginter in the Semi's. He is ranked #1 15U World of Wrestling Rankings @132, is the #87 Overall ranked wrestler on Rokfin Mat Scouts class of 2024, is a special mention on Wrestling USA All-Class Rankings and is an HM on both Rokfin and Flo @138 and will be ranked before the end of his Sophomore year. I predict he will be a top 5 ranked wrestler in the country at his weight; before he exits high school and RI's first Big Ten Wrestler in, well, maybe ever.
Betancur a Senior, is currently ranked #15 on Flo, is an HM on Rokfin Mat Scouts, and a special mention in the newest rankings just released from Wrestling USA ALL-Class! He has three wins over Nationally ranked wrestlers, one being #17 Norris and a recent win over ranked #16 Lacoma from Virginia at Journeymen! Adolfo was already an aggressive, quick and hyper mobile big man at 285, but after dropping what looks like 50+ pounds he is much quicker. I see him packing on 15-20+lbs of muscle over the next two years and being that prototypical 245-255 HVY at the next level, add a quick low single to his arsenal and you have a very dangerous big man!!! Commitment forthcoming!
I think they may be the best to come out of RI in a long time, even better than recent stellar kids who preceded them!!
Other p4p wrestlers to consider Myers, Ellis, Hood, Zarella, Reall

No major upsets. Hope was missing 2 or starters and Mt. Hope was missing 5 starters. Over all it was a good day with some good wrestling and competitive duels. Looking forward to seeing everyone getting healthy and hopefully finding a way to manage COVID protocols a little better.

Thanks Shoot. I didn't realize it was a dual-team format rather than a tournament format like it was in the past. Franklin and Lowell are usually pretty good Massachusetts teams so that's a good start for two of the top RI contenders.

It is also noteworthy that this is the second national-level tournament that Gabe went further than the wrestler who beat him in the New England finals, Kai O'Dell of Danbury CT. Neither placed at the Super 32 tourney, but at the Beast O'Dell lost to Jake Doone, of Nazareth PA, who Bouyssou pinned in the blood round on his way to 5th place. O'Dell had a good showing, winning three straight consolation matches after losing in the second round, so New England was well represented at this weight class.
Another strong NE performance was turned in by Joshua Cordio of Lancaster MA (Nashoba Regional) who had finished second to Nick Fine of Hendricken at 170 in the New England championship. Cordio finished 3rd at 182 for the highest NE placer at Beast of the East. With several New England teams in attendance (Xavier CT among the others already mentioned) Timberlane NH was the highest finisher despite no place winners; they took the whole team.
