Anyone from Rhode Island going to Fargo this week and/or next, also known as the USA Wrestling Junior and Under 16 Championships? I'm not sure how many New England participants there will be other than nationally ranked Nico Provo of Connecticut, a Prep School and NHSCA national champ. Anyone else? Two years ago Coventry's NHSCA champ Joziah Fry went to Fargo and placed 5th, one of the few RI wrestlers to ever place there. RI and New England had a very good showing at the NHSCA championships in April, and while that was in folkstyle and Fargo runs freestyle and Greco the RI and Mass wrestlers have the advantage of having just completed their wrestling seasons.

Nationally ranked girls: Kryssceah Ravenelle (No. 16 at 132)”
Men’s 16U Freestyle started this morning, I believe Hood / Ellis / Meyers and Bouyssou all made Round of 32 (its ~128 man brackets, Hood 64 man). I’ve only had a chance to watch Gabriel’s matches so far, looked dominant with two tech falls. Looks best on his feet but he’s been getting some turns as well. The pace is really impressive, always on attack. All matches are live on FloArena

Bouyssou by TF 12-0 1 minute in the 1st to move to Round of 16. Hit a nice 360 double to open the match.

Gabriel Bouyssou is into the quarterfinals, the only RI wrestler to make it that far and one of only two New England grapplers to do so (CT's William Henckel at 145 is the other). I don't think any of the other RI Under 16 wrestlers are still alive in freestyle, with Hayden Myers making it the furthest to the second consi-16 round and finishing 4-2 at 126.

Bouyssou lost his quarterfinal match at Under-16 132 lbs. but won his first consolation match. That puts him one match from the consolation semi-finals which I believe means he is guaranteed to place, no worse than 8th. That's a remarkable achievement. In the Junior freestyle RI entries the only one still alive is Betancur who made it to the 285 Round of 16.

I think it’s fair to do a deep dive on Bouyssou to see how he’s measuring up locally meaning here in New England versus all HS grades, how he’s measuring up nationally versus opponents in similar grades, and how he’s measuring up nationally versus opponents in all HS grades. Why? Well, as much as Serge is a nice meaning human, he’s in constant promotion mode, which sort of opens him up to what I believe is some “righting the ship” evaluations. None of this is meant to be a knock on Gabe or his family who all seem to be amazing humans. It’s just an opinion from an outside observer. Just as we all congratulate everyone who attended Fargo and came up short, we too congratulate Gabe who seems to be on a path to a D1 program, possibly even on scholarship. If you’re like me, I’ve watched a lot of matches this weekend and everyone of Gabe’s matches. Quickly, I want to say how impressed I am with the Myers kid. Real grit, even though he didn’t place his 4-2 had some tough matches. That’s the thing with tournaments like Fargo. You can’t pick your opponents. You can only wrestle who is on the bracket in your box. Now onto the Bouyssou matches. 132 lbs Gabriel Bouyssou 116 man bracket 4-0 on day 1 1-1 on day 2: winning his first consi match guaranteed placement. 1-1 on day 3 Analysis of opponents: 1. Gabriel Grilho from Hawaii- Finding data on Grilho is almost impossible. The Open Mat has nothing, Flo has a total of two videos both from today. Safe to say he wanted to experience North Dakota but not much else. DNP at Fargo. 2. Logan Lopez from San Diego, CA- Up until 2020 he was listed as JV on Trackwrestling. His last 4 tournaments are DNP (Did Not Place). Unranked. DNP at Fargo. 3. Damen Miller from Arizona- Overall went 3-2 and was out on day 1. Unranked. Division 1 State Champion in Arizon at 132 lbs. Arizona has 3 state champions in each weight class. DNP’d at Fargo. Does have state paper. Mildly credible opponent. 4. Nicholas La Morte of New York- County Champion, unranked. 0-2 at the NYS Championships @ 113. DNP at Fargo 5. Travis Grace of California- Quarter Finals matchup. To me this is the first credible opponent. The others with the exception of Damen Miller had no paper. Travis Grace is a USA Western States Champion, went 7-1 at the Middle School National Duals, went undefeated at the VAC duals in MS. Gabe takes a loss by Technical Superiority to a credible opponent. 6. Jacob Schmadeke of Arizona- Unranked, no state paper, First consolation match. A win here places Gabe on podium. Gabe has previously faced this opponent and won by a score of 7-1 at a preseason tournament. Gabe wins handily. Schmadeke DNP. 7. Jason Mara of Idaho- #2 seed at 126 lbs. in Idaho State Championshiops, 2021 Idaho State Champion @ 126 lbs. Gabe takes a loss in a close 10-8 match to a credible opponent. 8. Smokey McClure- Took 4th place in state out of an 8-man bracket. No other paper. Based on these matches, it seems Gabe Bouyssou had 3 credible opponents with paper which he went 1-2 against. That’s not his fault. He didn’t know who his opponents would be, but in wrestling... sometimes you get a road to the podium that’s a buzzsaw and sometimes you get a road that’s just easier. What’s this mean to me, a wrestling fan? Well it just means the Gabe’s future is still to be determined. Although he did take 3rd at NHSCA’s against opponents (I have not evaluated) in his grade which is great and if he can continue to repeat that success he’s going to hit the credible opponents he needs to put him in a place where he’s a D1 scholarship prospect. What I’d hit if I was him in 2021/22... Super 32, NHSCA, and Fargo again in the summer. I think Gabe is talented. He’s still young and I don’t know how old the kid in Connecticut, Kai O’Dell is, but if he stays the same weight as Gabe that will be his competition in New England. I hope this adds some clarity to GB’s CURRENT accolades. He’s certainly talented, but from the outside perspective, he’s probably not AS talented as his dad (I mean it’s his dad so I get it) promotes him to be. However, like anything, especially in wrestling he certainly could be in the next 2-3 years an amazing success story. I’d just pump the breaks a bit on him being the anointed one at this point.

Thanks your opinion is appreciated. The ship is now righted. Also I will keep promoting wrestling, my state, my kid and my club to get out there and wrestle on the national level. I know full well that it will * some people off and that is ok. We know we are not the best in the country we are only trying to be! Hey RIFan... So, what do you call fair analysis? Where does it stop? Should I fairly assess the kids you have raised and possibly coached? Because if I do I would say they were all JV wrestlers at best. I mean; RI is such a small state that the state championship is held in a gym that kids from CA can't even fit their average weekend 32man tournament in... yet where are your Fargo kids? Where are your Tulsa, Reno, NHSCA, NE kids at? The best part about your post is how you try to hide your oozing jealousy, hate, and inability to do what Serge is doing by having an "honest analyis" of a 15 year old kid. You sound like a sexual predator when you do that publicly, by the way- something you might want to consider.... but, seriously... it seems as if you are taking some type of gratification, which Mr Freud would suggest to most likely be of such a nature that we don't mention it in places like this, from trying to find negativity in the results of a 15 year old kid who is coached by his father. Why would you want to do that? Are you dense to the point that you think Serge needs your advice? Are you a coaching equal whose club has almost half the total number of RI state placers? Are you investing the time and energy to train and take the kids to all those events and change their lives? You use the word "fan" in your moniker. Yet a fan you are not of RI wrestling. A fan would be overjoyed for what the kids from MQ are doing. A fan would have the attitude of "I am all for what is helping improve RI wrestling for the best"... but you don't do that. You hide in some hovel seeking a sick gratification for yourself in trying to take down the accomplishments of a 15 year old and his dad/coach/club. Yet you cannot, have not, and will not ever have the same results in your many years on this earth. I am sure you do the best you can with whatever you got... you just don't have a lot and don't work hard enough to know that you hardly work at all. Next time I how about you keep that disgusting desire to publicaly self-gratify to yourself? We really don't want to watch it.... and, maybe a bit of psychoanalysis will help you figure out why a grown man is trying to be critical of a 15 year old kid and his dad.... I think it’s fair to do a deep dive on Bouyssou to see how he’s measuring up locally meaning here in New England versus all HS grades, how he’s measuring up nationally versus opponents in similar grades, and how he’s measuring up nationally versus opponents in all HS grades. Guys guys guys, let's keep it civil. I don't want to close this thread early since there is still a lot of Fargo to go, involving most of the same RI wrestlers, so let's concentrate on what's happening on the mat. That being said, RIfanz actually did a fair bit of research to substantiate his position regarding Gabriel Bouyssou, although I think the part about labeling Serge a "promoter" was at best unnecessary and at worst exaggerated. Serge is a big boy and can and did defend himself and his son/team well (thank you for self-censuring yourself Serge). And it's very rare on this forum that anyone goes through such lengths to substantiate their position. Nevertheless I disagree with Rifanz1 on two bases: the first being the local perspective. Gabe won a RI state wrestling championship as a freshman in a weightclass that wasn't a lightweight class and had several returning state placewinners. That is significant because I can only think of one other RI wrestler who did that in the past 20-forever years: Cole McGill in 2015 when he was still at Narragansett. Most if not all of the state's 3 or 4x state champs started out in the 100-120 classes over the years. Can you think of anyone else who did this in RI? Moreover, Gabe placed second in the New England tournament this year. Yes, I know it wasn't the regular New Englands (what has been lately?) but again, I can't think of another RI freshman who made the NE finals at a weight above 120. Can you? And this class had several returning NE placewinners including a returning champ Max Leete and the above mentioned Mr. Kai O'Dell of Danbury CT who had already placed twice at NE (and does return next year). So on a "local" perspective Gabriel's first year accomplishments are extremely impressive and perhaps matchless in RI.
Then on the second "big stage" perspective, well, Gabe placed at Fargo as a freshman (7th at 132 if you're keeping score). I say again: Mr. Bouyssou placed at Fargo. I say it again because I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times I've been able to say that about a Rhode Island wrestler, let alone a freshman. Pat Feeley: 1st 2003, 3rd 2004, 7th 2006, between Johnston, Trinity Prep and BH over a varied and broad career, so arguably RI's best big stage performer so far. Corey Peltier, 2nd at Under-16 (then called cadet) 160 lb. class in 2006, in between attending BH and national power Blair Academy where he was a two-time National Prep runner-up. Joziah Fry of Coventry, 5th at 113 in 2019 to go along with an NHSCA title. I don't recall anyone from RI even attending Fargo before the 21st Century, but my memory is not what it used to be, so please feel free to add any names I may have missed. And it's FARGO, inarguably the toughest high school wrestling tournament in the USA, year in and year out.
So on both the local scene and the national scene Gabe is, well, a very big deal. Now after saying he doesn't need defending I have apparently defended him or even - dare I say - promoted him. Consequently I'm not of a mind for "pumping the brakes" at this moment. Let's simply encourage the Bouyssou's and the other wrestlers willing to take on the best competition they can face, and let's see what happens. As I said there is a lot of Fargo left to go including Under-16 and Junior National Greco. Serge had it right: RI is not the best - heck, we're the "gimme" when the other states see that state name in their bracket - but we're trying to be the best. So if you aren't out their representing RI on the mat you can support those that are. PLEASE be respectful of all, even the critics.

riwrestlingfanz1 You talk about how amazing our family is because you are trying to not make yourself look so bad after you are done putting limits on a 15-year-old and knocking their accomplishments. It is clear to me that you are jealous. This is Katelyn Jarrell and I do not like fake friends. Gabe I love you and I am proud of all of your hard work.

Ok let’s move on and talk about our R.I. wrestlers and how well they are doing here. Most of our kids are brand new to freestyle and Greco. I am so super excited to see this very young team here and banging heads with anyone that’s put in front of them! I look forward to seeing our growth and development between this year and next. I believe we will improve a lot over the next year as a state. Rhode Island has really come a long way and is starting to get some respect on the national scene. The best is yet to come!

So it does take both hands. I did remember Packam then forgot to include him. He was 8th in Cadet Greco as a rising freshman in 2005. And shame on me for forgetting Logan, the first female wrestler from RI to place at Fargo. I actually go far enough back the late 1960's in RI wrestling history but don't know the first two guys on the list. Were they prep school wrestlers? Oliver and Lema were champs for Bristol in 91 but I didn't know of their Fargo accomplishments. Thanks for the list.
Some quick updates: Betancur didn't place in freestyle; he lost his quarterfinal match then lost his first consolation match. Amazingly he lost to the same wrestler - Charles Crews III of Pennsylvania - who also beat Antonio Ramos and Tristan Kemp of Massachusetts in the same bracket, the three best heavyweights in New England. Tristan, who beat Betancur 1-0 for the NE title in April, finished 6th at 285 freestyle.
U16 Greco has started and Gabriel Bouyssou in the only RI wrestler still alive. He lost his second match then reeled off SEVEN consecutive wins in the consolation round to make it to the Consi Round of Four. That means he's guaranteed no worse than 8th in Greco making him, yup, a double-Fargo place-winner. Again, amazing! Hayden Myers gave another yeoman effort finishing 3-2.

Another update: Gabe won his 7th place match in Greco U16 by a 12-6 decision, making him officially a 2x Fargo All American. He finished 9-2 in the Greco portion of the tournament. Only Pat Feeley of Johnston HS ever had a better freshman year for a RI wrestler as he won RI and NE titles at 106 lbs. then won Fargo Junior Freestyle at 100 lbs. Bouyssou's double AA is certainly comparable.
The RI Junior Greco squad has finished their tournament. Everyone lost their first Greco match, but only Adolfo Betancur won any consolation matches (though Cooper and Rutherford lost excruciatingly close matches). Betancur won his first two before losing in the Consi Round of 16 #2. That was too bad besides knocking him out of the tournament because had he won he would have faced Tristan Kemp of Mass. who edged him for the NE 285 championship. Still, a good tournament and better experience for all of the Rhode Island competitors.

I really look forward to coming back here next year with team RI. I think our RI kids turned some heads with their toughness and I believe with 1 year of experience we will go much deeper in the brackets. All of our kids that came here are brand new to freestyle and Greco wrestling and I think they all do a fantastic job. Next year we will all be better prepared for this event and I can some multiple kids coming back with some hardware! Great job team R.I.!

I didn’t really follow the Greco matches that closely. I figured the MQ guys with their judo backgrounds would have a great advantage with there being no leg attacks. I’m super happy for everyone that attended Fargo and got some great matches from opponents across the country. I’m sure it was a long week. Specifically on Gabe Bouyssou, he should feel really proud about his performance. Taking home two stop signs is a real accomplishment. Congratulations! His family should be super proud of the support and hard work they’ve also provided to get Gabe where he’s at. My analysis of his FS opponents earlier was just that, an analysis. An honest one in my opinion. I think GB is going to go really far. He’s only a freshman and still needs head-to-head matchups with ranked opponents but I’m confident he’ll get those soon. I look forward to following his HS career. CONGRATS to everyone!!!

Let's give a nod to the coaches too for Team RI. Great job!
And while all the Smith brothers were great, including Robb, Danny was someone truly special, the first 4X NE Champ and selected for the U.S. vs. PA team. He got a full ride to Boston University (yes, they used to wrestle Division I then) but injuries greatly limited his NCAA career.
