A really good showing by RI wrestlers this weekend at the annual NHSCA Wrestling Championships, led by Nicholas Fine's title at 170 lbs. in the Senior Division. He went nearly unchallenged through the tournament with three pins, a 12-5 decision in the semis, then a 4-0 shutout over Florida's Tylynn Lukens in the finals. This is Nick's FOURTH time as an NHSCA All American, even with the cancellation of the 2020 tournament since he was an AA as an 8th grader in 2017. I'm pretty sure that's a first for RI. This also gives RI national champs in consecutive NHSCA tournaments since Joziah Fry won the 2019 Juniors at 106. The other senior placer from RI was Aidan Faria who placed an impressive 3rd at 160. Aidan finished 5-1 and after losing in the quarterfinals he beat the same wrestler, Missouri's Kaden Hart, in the consolation finals. Other RI seniors competing were Chris Gomez and Timothy Cook, both finishing 3-2 at 132 lbs (with Chris losing in the blood round, one win short of AA), Jack Schartner and D'Ante Silva. Oddly J'Mari Lowman did compete and finished 8th in a well-stocked 145 lb. class, but he is listed on the Connecticut roster, not as an RI team member. Anyone know why this is; did he move?
Rhode Island had AA's at all levels of the boys' NHSCA competition. In the Juniors 285 pounder Adolfo Betancur placed 4th in a division won by Antonio Ramos of Springfield MA, whom Adolfo has finished above in two New England tournaments. Kudos to Justin Hood finishing 3-2 at 145. In the Sophomore Division RI had two placers at 113, with Jacob Joyce making it all the way to the finals where he dropped a 6-4 decision to Jackson Baglio of North Carolina. Hayden Myers placed 8th after wrestling an amazing 10 matches. He dropped his first match to wrestle into the 64 man bracket, then reeled off seven straight victories before dropping his final two matches in the Consolation placings. In the Frosh Division RI had two more place-winners in Gabriel Bouyssou, 3rd at 126, and Peyton Ellis, 6th at 106. Gabriel made it to the semifinals before picking up two more wins to finish 3rd. Peyton won to the quarterfinals then finished with a 5-3 record. In the Middle School Division RI had 12 entrants with an impressive four placers: David Perez and Michael Diorio were 6th at 105 and 230, respectively, with Jared Hood 7th at 85 and Preston Marchesseault finishing the same at 142. It appears that RI didn't have any entrants in the Girls Division.
There were many more place-winners including champs from other New England states. Most notably in the Senior Division there was an all-Massachusetts final at 113 with NE champ Nicholas Curley of Burlington beating Chelmford's Evan Kinney 11-7; Connecticut's Nico Provo, a Prep School AA winning at 126; New Canaan, CT's Justin Mastroianni, a former NHSCA Frosh national champ finishing second at 145; Fine at 170; and Conor Maslanek of Pelham, NH, champ at 195. Other NE champs or finalists were the aforementioned Ramos winning at Junior 285 (and who, oddly, was listed as an 11th grader last year on the Masswrestling.com site and in the New England program); Norwalk, CT's Brendan Gilchrist runner-up at Sophomore 195, Nate Taylor of Newton, CT, champ at Frosh 160, and Zachary Zindle who finished 2nd in the Middle School 165 class. I haven't tallied the total accomplishments of all the New England wrestlers at this year's NHSCA championships but it appears that once again the aggregated NE states would be comparable to the much larger and often more populous states known to be wrestling hotbeds. Good show!
