I was curious what the RIIL was doing since they've approved Wrestling as a "spring" sport but there are no schedules up yet. Are schools working out yet? Who was working out, and how, during the lock down?
So far only one New England state has had a wrestling season, and that was New Hampshire. They cancelled tournaments but still had dual meets between most of the high schools with wrestling programs in January and February. Unfortunately there's no current website for NH wrestling that I know of, but if you're interested you can check results on Trackwrestling. Vermont and Massachusetts cancelled their seasons back in November, and the New England Secondary Schools Principals Association cancelled all Winter sports championships in November as well. I'm pretty sure Maine cancelled wrestling too, and Connecticut has been vague. They postponed major/moderate risk sports pending the re-classification of the "risk" of the athletic activities, much as RI did, but CT didn't approve wrestling for the Spring. Instead their Interscholastic league approved wrestling for the last week of Winter sports, which I think was the past week, and only allowed scrimmaging between schools, not actual matches. I'm still not sure if that even happened. So if RI can get even a partial wrestling season in that would be an accomplishment.
Despite the lock down there were a few national schoolboy tournaments that were held, including the Super 32 which had some RI and NE participants. No RI placers but two from NH. I'll try to cover those results sometime. Also, while college wrestling was greatly reduced in New England - no Ivy schools wrestled, so no Brown - there were a very few Division III colleges competing (RIC, Coast Guard, Castleberry), AIC in Division II and Sacred Heart in Division I. So there were some former RI wrestlers actually competing this Winter. I'll do a report on those guys later as well.
So any updates on the current state of high school wrestling in RI would be greatly appreciated, even if it's just what your school or club is doing now.
