For the third year in a row Coventry's Feinstein Middle School won the 2020 RIPCOA wrestling tournament on Feb. 1-2. The Oakers edged Mt. Hope's Kickemuit MS 210.5 to 199, oddly with 12 place-winners to Kickemuit's 14, but while Feinstein only had two finalists they placed an impressive 6 in the consolation finals for the deciding points. Warwick Vets was third, one position up from last year. Chariho was fifth, while with Nathaniel Green MS improving to fourth there were four Providence middle schools from 4th through 9th place, a real tribute to programs like Beat the Streets and other wrestling programs for kids in the urban areas.
There were a lot of familiar names in the finals: Hood, Bland, Joyce, Schartner, Monteiro, Anderson, Bouyssou, Watts, Fine and Thibedeau, with scattered sightings of a Grifka, an Arsenault and a Cardarelli here and there. I immediately think of questions for the 2020-21 season: Will Coventry continue to reload light and middleweights, but add depth to the mostly returning upperweights with candidates such as 205 runner-up Ason Jones and 165 3rd Dason Jones as well as 180 3rd Cardarelli? Where will Pontaganet put this year's stock of tough (mostly) lightweights in a lineup that returns virtually everyone up and down the line-up? And where will Hendricken put Spencer Fine since the Hawks return every starter (except Kupervich if he's still starting) from 132 to 195; anywhere he wants to? Will Cumberland be able to reload the way they typically do each season, though they lose a lot of senior talent this year with McCourt and North Cumberland MS not quite as productive these last two seasons? Stay tuned following the States.
