In a tourney chock-full of ranked southern New England teams on Jan. 18, BH finished 3rd behind Conn. #4-ranked Xavier and #2-ranked Simsbury, ahead of Conn. #8 Trumbull and #5 Bristol Eastern, as well as Burlington, Mass., ranked as high as #2 as a tournament team. The precise order of finishes might have been a little skewed since some of the teams left early to avoid the oncoming storm. Hendricken had four champs: their big 4 of Fallon, Fine, Bailey and Betancur. The tournament had a very confusing format: the 16 wrestlers per bracket were divided in round robin pools of 4 all meeting each other, with the winners going to a final four of pool winners and the runners-up four in a separate final four. So, BH had true 3rd placers of Keaney and Maroney (over Guererro up at 145) while Iacobucci, Mead and Caldwell were RR-2nd "champs," actually 5th place winners.
Due to some of the early departures there weren't as many big ranking match-ups for the Hendricken wrestlers. Fallon majored the 5th-ranked CT 126 wrestler in his final while Fine pinned his way through, almost tech-falling CT's #2 ranked Tischio of Xavier in his semi-final. The two Conn-ranked 285 pounders both forfeited before their 1-4 matches, while Bailey didn't face either of the Conn. Class L ranked wrestlers in his matches. For Connecticut wrestling fans and New England ranking fans there were big matches in most weight classes: at 106 Conn. top-ranked Brault of Joel Barlow beat #2 Longo of Trumbull in their final after Longo had won by default over #2 in Mass. Zack Soda of Burlington in the semis; at 113 Conn. #1 Rapuono of Xavier (previously #1 at 120) majored Mass. #1 and Lowell champ Cam Soda; at 120 new Conn. #1 Currier of Hall majored Mass. #4 Perna of Burlington; at 132 Conn. HM Jack Ryan of Trumbull majored Keaney then dropped a 5-4 decision to Conn. #2 and Lowell champ Finn of Simsbury; at 138 Conn. #2 Mairono of Simsbury won but #4 Nichols of Bristol Eastern forfeited out; at 145 Conn. #1 Lunt of Xavier beat #2 Pera of Simsbury in the finals after decisive wins over the BH entrants in their semis; at 152 Conn #5 beat #6 but #3 forfeited; At 160 Tischio beat Conn. #3 Sirois of Simsbury 2-1 in their Round-robin; at 170 #5 McNeary of Joel Barlow beat #6 Miner of Xavier in the finals; at 195 New England champ Carson Licastri of Joel Barlow lost by default to Conn. #3 Ruiz of Xavier in their final.
Its confusing if you just look at the Results section. To find out how entrants actually made out it's necessary in each weight class to check all 4 pool round-robins, then look at the 1-4 and 5-8 results. It actually makes the Fargo brackets easy to follow by comparison. Link to Floarena below; have fun!
