Cumberland hosted its annual John Gorman Invitational tourney on Jan. 11 with another strong field, including facing New Hampshire and New England power Timberlane for the second week in a row. But it was Conn. 2nd-ranked Simsbury that took first place, with Timberlane a close second and Cumberland near behind in third. Conn. 4th-raned Bristol Eastern was fourth and Hope finished fifth in the 20 team field. Cumby had two champs and 11 place-winners, more than Simsbury and Timberlane though those teams had 6 finalists each for more advancement points. Passanante and Faria had big finals wins over Timberlane opponents. Gillis was upset early and Reilly lost in the semis, both finishing third. North Providence matched Cumberland with two champs: Maurice Cooper at 113 and Symmes at 195. Hope had a champ in Maurice Cooper at 113 and runners-up Torres and Reigosa, but Guarcas wasn't entered.
