Possibly the toughest in-season wrestling tournament in the Northeast (New York, New Jersey and New England), Ponaganset became the first RI team entered that I can recall in the tourney's 18 year history (maybe Coventry entered one year?). The Chieftains accounted themselves well with both Joyces and Bottella-Robshaw earning 8th place finishes, and Ponsy finished tied for 33rd in the 170 school field. It's the best tournament in New York since most of the best schools and wrestlers from both divisions in NY are entered as well as some teams from NJ and PA, including this year nationally ranked #1 Wyoming Seminary. The Joyce brothers both dropped a weight class for this tournament, made possible since New York has a 99 lb weight class and the Eastern States Classic has a generous weight allowance. Don't know if that means Mike Joyce is considering a move to 120 for States/NE.
New England entrants did very well this year, with defending NE champs Danbury finishing third and Mass. #1 Springfield Central fifth. Also, Joel Barlow (CT) 14th, Xavier (CT) 28th and Nashoba (MA) 38th. There were four finalists from New England schools, with NE champ Carson Licastri of Joel Barlow majoring Darby McLaughlin of Springfield Central at 195 in a very rare all-NE final, and NE champ ranked #3 nationally Ryan Jack of Danbury runner-up at 132 while Nashoba's Brevin Casella was 2nd at 160.
Ponaganset is to be commended for its slate of tough tournaments out of New England this season: Beast of the East, Sam Cali, and now the Eastern States. Note that these are all tournaments entered by Danbury as well, which won two of the last three New England team titles around Ponaganset's win in 2018. That shows the value of competition, facing tougher opponents to get better at the New England level. Link to results in Floarena below:
