The Rhode Island Wrestling Officials Association (RIWOA) is opening recruitment for qualified applicants to officiate middle school and high school wrestling for the 2019-2020 school year. Requirements for membership and officiating is as follows:
Applicant MUST be 18 years of age or older.
Applicant MUST be of good moral character.
Applicant MUST have reliable method(s) of transportation with which to attend assignments.
Applicant MUST be able to communicate effectively through phone, text, and email.
Applicant MUST be able to pass a background check with the Rhode Island Interscholastic League (RIIL).
Applicant MUST be able to register with the RIIL as a Wrestling Official through THIS LINK. Cost is $32 and NON-REFUNDABLE. Please do not complete this step until you have made initial contact with the RIWOA.
Applicant MUST be able to competently use a computer with which to access websites to accept assignments and maintain availability.
Applicant MUST attend the RIWOA training course (8 classes). Classes are on Mondays at 7 PM. Classes begin October 7th and end December 2nd. (Columbus Day 10/14 no class)
Applicant MUST attend TWO RIWOA membership meetings: November 13th and December 4th. Start Time is 6:30 PM
Applicant MUST pass the NFHS Wrestling Rules Test.
Applicant MUST have reasonable availability with which to accept scholastic assignments. Sub-varsity events often start at 4:00 PM on Wednesdays and Fridays.
All applicants will be considered. Wrestling experience is not a necessity, but the learning curve is VERY STEEP for those who have little to no previous knowledge of the sport. Experience as a competitor, coach, or previous officiating is a plus.
