Two Rhode Island wrestlers placed in the NHSCA Wrestling Championships this past weekend, with Devin Rivet finishing 8th at 152 lbs. in the Senior division and Nicholas Fine 7th at 120 in the Freshmen division. I believe they are the first RI high school place-winners at NHSCA nationals since James Sauro placed 6th in the Freshmen division five years ago. Fine also placed in the 8th Grade division last year. All from BH!? I don't think anyone else from RI placed at the high school level this year although several others did very well. Noah Young of Coventry was one win from placing at 132, going one round further than teammate Seth Brown. Wrzesien made the "blood round" as well, Caltagirone was 4-2 at 132 in Junior division, Clarke 5-2 at 120 in the Sophomore division, Cook was 4-2 at 106 Freshmen while Dougherty was 3-2 at 145. Numerous other RI competitors won more than one match.
There were three RI-affiliated wrestlers who placed in the 8th Grade division this year with Peyton Ellis and Jacob Joyce 2nd and 5th respectively at 75 lbs. and Christian Rutherford 8th at 135. Overall a great showing by RI wrestlers at one of the most prominent folkstyle national wrestling tournaments.
Three New England wrestlers won championships: Jarod Kosman of Connecticut at 113 Seniors, Connor McGonagle of New Hampshire at 132 Juniors, and Justin Mastroianni at 132 Freshmen (up a class from 126 where he was New England runner-up). Mastroianni also won the 132 class in the Champ vs. Champ competition. He's gonna be a monster for three more years. I counted 22 place-winners from NE among the four high school classes.
