I have commented on 132 mostly this season. It seems the top 132 are true competitors, with all the talk, and some of it not very nice, these student athletes rose above it all with nothing to say to the newspapers accept how they respect each other. I think we could all take the lead from these young men. Congratulations and make some noise this week end, TEAM RHODE ISLAND.

Yes it's very classy to have a shirt made special that has your name on the front and "Jordan 96/97" on the back.
Can you imagine Meyers, Altieri, Giblin, the Labries or any of the other great wrestlers that have gone through this state doing that??? It's ridiculous.
By the way, there is no TEAM RHODE ISLAND. This isn't a dual meet tournament. If you meet one of your fellow competitors from RI expect them to attempt to rip your head off like usual.

Mike I am trying to find some positive things to say and the comments in the neswpapers were just that, positive. Yes there is no TEAM Rhode Island. When Celico sees Bloom in the finals or anywhere else I am sure it will be a knock down drag out and I would not expect anything else. Celico did take your choice for 132 apart, but I can see how you leaned that way. Its easy not to like the #1 132 but he won straight up. 3/4 of the state was rooting for Celico, very likable kid and a definable class act rite there..

I understand what you are saying but I think it is even worse because there is this act, this persona, that is fake. Say all the right things but be cocky and disrespectful to opponents and RI wrestling in general. It's been going on for a long time from some of the same kids and their families. Like I've said before there is an air of superiority. No sense of history. No knowledge or understanding of those who have come before them.
Giblin, Meyers, Altieri would have pinned Abe Bloom this weekend without any t-shirt declaring they would do so.

Well said Mike, maybe he is seeing that a little and will continue to build on it. Last yeas article in their local newspaper was an embarrassment for them and the Rhode Island wrestling community did not like it. Different tone this year and it was a big step in the rite direction for him. Kids tend to act like the parents, the family dynamic sets them on the path, they can always move to aspire to something great. You have to give credit where credit is due and those 2 wrestlers were top notch on Saturday.

Mike not sure what you have against Bloom. Maybe it's the MB affiliation that you've expressed dislike for. I've always seen a polite and respectful wrestler on and off the mat. A freshman finalist losing to N. Celico, a sophomore State and NE champ, and a repeat state champ in the states deepest class. I think he's earned his stripes. I see no mention of Celico's win over Stamas about clapping and waving his hands. These young wrestlers get caught up in the moment sometimes. As for the shirt, did he disrespect anyone? No, he confidently said I'm winning this weight class. How many people actually understood the shirt's reference? As for his quotes in last years article in his local paper, those were said due to N. Celico's quotes of Bloom the year before. And we are Team RI, everyone will be practicing together this week. Everyone will be rooting on their own state, unless they're wrestling each other. Enemies on the mat whistle to whistle, friends off. Your opinion is yours, and everyone has one, but move on, you've stated your case. Best of luck to ALL of RI next weekend.

I do remember Bloom trash talking a kid that left indoor track 6 weeks before states to come back to defend a title he hardly trained for.

Googling back Bloom took offense to "good little wrestler" in 2014 and responded w it was his motivation, only other thing in there was he new he broke him and kept on him in 2015. ALSO according to the article Nick came back Jan 1st. Both had ample time to be ready. It was a great match. Probably would have been an NE finals rematch if Nick went. I believe in 08 O'Connell CW beat Hayek EG in state finals but lost to him in NE finals. Either way I have no horse in the race, but let the facts be facts. Both are stud wrestlers and hopefully they meet for a rematch next wkend. Again best luck to ALL RI wrestlers, kick sum @$$

This thread was supposed to be a positive thread talking about the classy behavior of wrestlers this past week end. There was mutual respect on and off the mat this past weekend from many many wrestlers and that is what I choose to remember going forward. Keep the good vibs going guys!!

"ALSO according to the article Nick came back Jan 1st. Both had ample time to be ready." Obviously you know less than you would like to admit. 6 or even 8 weeks of preparation does not in any way equal 9 months of preparation, not to take anything away from Bloom either, he wanted it, went after it , and got it. Celico was running all that time and still put him to his back and gave him a good go.
