Defending New England team champions Mt. Anthony Union of Vermont beat Bishop Hendricken 37-15 last night in Bennington Vermont. I think it was a better match than last year, but it shows there's still a significant gap from the top of RI to the top of NE in the wrestling food chain. To be fair, that's the second-lowest points scored by MAU in a match this season according to their website (35-20 over Connecticut champ Danbury). I've attached a link to the Bennington Banner news article. A little hard to follow on names, but it looks like there were upsets on both sides, with Hendricken's 220 pounder (OConnor? Monti? Avila?) beating veteran and NE qualifier Luciano 8-6, and with apparently DiMauro losing to another seasoned veteran Shaler at 152. Looks like Nick Celico pinned and Stewart and Sauro won by decision. Most interesting match seemed to be Lowell Tourney finalist Raetz pinning Rivet "with Rivet's own spladle." Wonder if that bout could have gone differently. And DiSano losing only 4-1 to defending NE Champ Gassaway, who had pinned his way through the Lowell field at 126 in December. Today BH and MAU will take part separately in a quad with Cumberland there and ranked teams from Connecticut and New Hampshire. Here's the best I can come with for the results of the MAU Duals the next day. Hendricken lost a close one to Mass. No. 1 Springfield Central 31-30, actually tying them in the meet 30-30 but losing on criteria. Looks like it was on pins, 3 for SC versus 2 for BH and 3 majors. Still, a remarkable showing for the RI No. 1 against the best team in our much larger neighbor to the north. Maybe even more impressive was Hendricken beating Connecticut No. 1 Xavier 41-18. That's simply amazing. Connecticut has 2-3 times as many high schools with wrestling teams as RI. Granted, Xavier looks like a better dual meet team and may not fare as well in Connecticut's Class LL and Open State tournament as teams like Danbury, New Milford and Newton, but that's still 23 point margin of victory! BH also beat Keene but I don't know the score.
Other RI scores in the mutli-state MAU duals:
MAU def. Cumberland 69-6 Cumberland def. South Windsor (CT) 40-27 Springfield Central def. Cumberland 53-18
Coventry def. Keene (NH) 39-33 Xavier def. Coventry 58-19 South Windsor def. Coventry 42-29
I could only find two box scores, but fortunately Springfield Central keeps a good website. Here's the match with Hendricken:
Central Vs Bishop Hendricken Date: 02-07-2015 106 Keith Gordon Pin1:09 Nappi 0 6 0 113 Matt Garcia 2 Celico 0 3 0 120 Kenneth Alvarez 4 Rivet 10 0 3 126 Dametrius Sturdivant 0 Disano Pin 3:50 0 6 132 Alan Rivera-Moore 0 Celico Pin 3:19 0 6 138 Isaiah Moldonado 3 Jacobson 11 0 4 145 Hakeem Whitley-Sharif 2 Arruda 7 0 3 152 Joel Serrano 0 Dimauro 8 0 4 160 Jonathan Viruet Pin 2:40 Stewart 0 6 0 170 Jástice Bolden 11 Johnson 4 3 0 182 Nick Koury 0 Alsaro 10 0 4 195 Jered Escribano 3 Martino 1 3 0 220 Ryan Pinkham 4 O'Connor 1 3 0 285 Joseph Luna Pin2:45 Cole 0 6 0 Criteria 1 0 TOTALS 31 30
That was a good match. Not sure what weight they started, but if at 106 then Springfield had to win the last three to pull it out; two close matches and pin. Nick Celico losing to Garcia was crucial to the outcome. Have to give Stewart a pass on getting pinned by Viruent, who is New England champ, Eastern States champ, NHSCA national junior champ, and beat Andrew Labrie twice last season. Nuff said.
Here's Cumberland match results:

Solid win for Giorgio over Excribano. I assume he lost to N.E. runner-up Mattison in the MAU match, since the Bennington Banner said Mattison was one of the (many) undefeated Mt. Anthony wrestlers in the duals. Still, good showing by RI teams against upper level teams from around New England, and so good preparation for the States and New England's upcoming. Hope the formatting works on these box scores.
