Top 4 teams from R.I. when it comes to wrestlers; BH- 7 EWG-5 Mt. Hope-5 Cumberland-4
Anyone want to take a guess which team does the best? Davol from BH at 113 and sauer have a descent shot at placing. EWG could have 3 place in the top 3.
Good luck to all wrestlers, coaches and fans this weekend! Should be fun seeing great wrestling!!

At 106 I hope to see a rematch between Collin Cardoso and Mike Aquino, Collin was leading up till third period in the finals against Aquino when he lost it 4-2 at the Lowell tourny. hopefully he can win all his matchs today and make it into the semis round in which I think he could be facing Morris from Tyngboro, or Freitas from Danbury.

I have to think that Exeter-West Greenwich has the best shot at a top team placing because of the Labrie's and Neff. I agree they're all top 3, though Neff could drop as far as 6th. Hendricken has the numbers but not the sure placewinners, and at New Englands the scoring is all about placing. Fortunately Davol, N. Celico, DiMauro, Boesch and Sauer all have NE experience so they have a shot, and J. Celico and Stewart should be scorers too. Cumberland's best shots are Beaudette and Hayes, but 120 is probably the toughest weightclass, while I think Hayes could place if only because he beat a possible placewinner at 182 in Humphries. Davol and Beaudette were both one match from placing last year, but it's going to be even harder this season. Cardosa is an almost sure placewinner for Mt. Hope, anywhere from 1-5, but while other team members can score I don't see anyone else placing. So if I had to rank RI teams placing I'll go EWG, BH, MH, Cum.
Here are a couple of New England Championship fun (?) facts: (1) There were no defending champions in last year's tourney. Yup, even Monserrat and Webb won their very first after placing as frosh and sophomores. I don't remember that happening before, other than the tournament's first year in 1960. I expect this year to be different, although one champ, Cavanna at 220, already lost in the Conn. Open finals, and one of the Labrie's lost to one of the Virulet's (and there is Maine stud Hughes at 160). (2) Ndi of NH is in the NE's despite being disqualified in his finals against Chimleski. According to a article in the Concord Monitor, after the finals the coaches talked to the refs and got the decision changed to a default so he could keep his second place position and enter the New England tournament. This after Ndi apparently hit Chimelski in the face twice during the match. I'll leave folks to draw their own conclusions, but I believe it's another reason to appreciate the level of officiating in RI.

Good write up atlantaal! It was a good read. Sometimes in the heat of competition it's hard to step back and appreciate the level of refereeing in the state. I haven't seen any tournaments or matches out of the state but have heard it can be spotty at times.

Cardoso will place but has a very tough road to the finals potentially Murillo from CT, then Byrd from NH then Freitas from CT just to win the chance to go against Aquino.

I think Garcia will win over Murillo, but don't see either Garcia or Byrd beating Cardosa. Garcia and Byrd have been wrestling for a while, but both are freshman and I don't think Garcia matches up well with wrestling ability, and Byrd can't match the physical maturity with Colin. I think Freitas from Ct will be the first one to really challenge Cardosa in the above scenario.

Cardoso beat Bourjeli 8-2 back in January at Mt. Anthony.

Does anyone know why none of the top three RI finishers at 195 entered the NE tournament? Giorgio went in as RI 1 and is in the quarterfinals.

Conley received stitches to his face last Friday and had to wrestle with the mask on Saturday. That probably had something to do with his absence.

Murillo hung tough at 4-0 headed to third but Cardoso wore him down. Celico over Dowler 8-0 was a surprise. Thought that match would be close. A lot of talented kids left at 106.

That was an awesome match between Andrew Labrie and Jon Viruet in the semis! It was a heart breaker for Andrew losing 3-1 but it was awesome scramble for control between those two in OT. I thought Andrew had it there for a second. Good luck to Christian Labrie and Carl Neff, I think the only 2 RI wrestlers that made it to the Finals. good luck to our guys in the consi finals.

Sometimes it's too bad they can't figure out a better seeding system because Andrew labrie and john Viruet are by far the best 2 at 160 in New England, and they meet in the semi's. But there are times it's just unavoidable I guess! It's been a nice showing by team RI, good luck to everyone who is still in it!

Congratulations to all the wrestlers from R.I. that placed! Congrats to Christian Labrie for being a 2 time New England champ, and to Carl neff for a very good showing against Butterbrodt. If anyone was there, I thought neff had him stuffed! It's pretty impressive that a school the size of EWG can place third at new England's two straight years!
