I wasn't crazy about the stalling calls in the 138 match. Watched it today. First Max got warned , then Tim , not sure either wrestler stalled. Then Tedesco tries to return Max to the mat repeatedly and gets a banged for a point. I will never understand stalling in HS wrestling. Someone explain. This is just about stalling in general not meant to take away from a great win by Max. I was also not sure about the stalling calls in that match. O'Connell also won the semis match with a stalling call at 2 seconds. Now I am not trying to take anything away from O'Connell, he is an outstanding talent. He was the best wrestler all year, and might have won regardless of those calls.

I think the stall calls in the semis were deserving, but the last call should have been called when he was hanging onto Max's leg with :30 to go, not when max was mule kicking out, tough to show advancement on someone mule kicking. I can say that I don't like time on the clock dictating stall calls, as it seems is the case. Something you may do in the 1st period won't get a call but the exact same thing gets you banged in the 3rd w/ short time. It may have been Travers/Jarell when Jarell shot, reshot, and reshot in a matter of a few seconds, and Travers sprawled, sprawled, sprawled, what else can you do to defend, but short time on the clock seemed to dictate the call. Over all I don't think we as a state are aggressive enough with stall calls. In the 1st period, if no one has shot and a minute has gone by, double stall, force action. You see bottom guys getting banged for stalling when top man has double boots in and driving hips forward, am I supposed to post and allow a power half, no, but you see guys struggling to rebase and get banged, while top guy looks at ref w hands raised asking for a call, and sometimes get it. Well now the top guy just stopped advancing in my eyes. Over all I say th refs did a great job, yes we all saw missed calls here and there, and disagree with calls here and there, but its a subjective sport at times, and they do go out looking to do their best.

First I want to start by repeating all of the congratulations to all wrestlers for a great weekend of competition. As a matter of fact everyone did a great job EXCEPT the RIIL! Once again they soaked families for every cent they could squeeze. Then they show total disdain for the same families by starting the finals 30 mins early after putting start time of 7 pm on internet. To add the last insult they gave the finalists no respect, robbing them of a proper introduction ceremony. Why such a rush? I guess with no more money to be made they couldn't get out of there fast enough. They should be ashamed. The kids and fans deserved far better than that. Sadly we are so used to RIIL sucking that it hasn't even been mentioned yet.

Well now the top guy just stopped advancing in my eyes. Over all I say th refs did a great job, yes we all saw missed calls here and there, and disagree with calls here and there, but its a subjective sport at times, and they do go out looking to do their best. Tough to play devils advocate here because they are all good points, but here it goes... What do you do if a guy goes shot, reshot, reshot other than sprawl, sprawl, sprawl to defend? Answer: go short offense on the first shot attempt you successfully sprawled away from. Front headlock, quarter nelson, crossface, go behind... attempt to score off the offense you were able to defend. The reason a wrestler is able to sprawl 3 times in a row on 3 quick shot attempts is because each time after his defense he made no attempt to counter offense and score, he simply pushed away... continuously done (i.e. 3 times in a row) is stalling. In the first period if no-one has shot, why not call double stalling? Answer: Shooting is not the only way to score a takedown or start offense. In fact I encourage wrestlers not to shoot until they have a proper opening. Why the hell am I going to take a random shot, there is no shot clock. I as a wrestler should be looking for hand control and tie-ups first. Something that will get me by my opponents head and hands defense before I attempt to attack his legs. Collar ties, shrugs, Russians, arm drags, snaps, push-pull steps... these are the things I look for first. These are the items that create smart, aggressive, and successful wrestling action, not just shooting for the sake of giving it a go. If I see these things in an effort to set up a shot but the head/hands defense isn't getting cleared then that wrestler isn't stalling, he's just not succeeding or his opponent is doing a good job countering. Now if wrestler A is trying all of these things and is not succeeding because Wrestler B is pulling away from the action, then wrestler B is stalling even though Wrestler A hasn't taken a single shot. So many scenarios, so little time... If I am on bottom and the top guy has double boots in, am I supposed to simply post out and let him power half me? Answer: Of course not. but you could bring both of you legs over one of the boots, which will allow you to put your knees on the mat. Then you can use you knees to work that boot up to your waste. Then you can either reach for that boot, and sit his ass on the mat, or you can work for hand control and get your butt to your feet. What you can't do is go, woe is me, he's got boots in, I hope I don't get pinned and lay there waiting for a whistle. I know its hard, I know he has the advantage, next time dont let the damn boots in. What about the top guy who looks at the ref with his hands up? Answer: I hate that guy too. He gets no sympathy from me. You are on top, you are kicking this kids ass. WTF are you looking at me for. Its not my fault you only know one way to finish this move and he's not letting you do it. Learn another finish in the practice room. In fact, pick a series learn the whole thing inside out. He does this, you do that, he changes here you go there... if you do that I guarantee, he could stall his balls off and you'll still stick him in 30 seconds. Enough said on these clowns...I digress

The guy on top with both legs in looking for stalling on bottom guy is annoying. But it did happen to one of our wrestlers this weekend. Top guy had him wrapped up like a snake , bottom guy got warned. Stalling has always left me scratching my head.

Well, when I wrestled if a guy was somewhat stalling on the bottom,I would take a crossface and rip it across his f.....ing nose until he moved a bit to set up a cradle or half...oops should I say that Kooky or should I seek medical attention...To many liberal bastards that are taming the sport.I have been around it for a while and would admit that the Refs have a tough job @ times,I just wish that they were all on the same page with all the calls, overall I think they did a good job over the weekend and in my eyes from a viewers point seen a few calls that were missed but know ones perfect. But RI REFS still rule, but I would like to see a mix of refs from different states in tourneys like this....But overall ,great job!!!!!!(My biggest gripe is the abuse that goes on with the injury timeouts and hope to see that changed someday)If you cant breathe out there "get your ass in shape or forfiet"I seen this abused at a dual meet but dont want to OFFEND anyone. And as another writer pointed out,and I agree THE RIIL keeps getting fatter and I mean literally, those greedy bastards have no buisness charging twice in a day(some of the same people at the door for the last 30 yrs,I wonder if its for the love of the Sport or for the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$...Well let me go rob a bank so I can go to the New Englands..lol,ps All kidding aside,I wish the Best for every boy competing, you all deserve to be there and am proud of the guys moving on to the college level...Go team RI...

I would have liked to see the kids get introduced properly and I also would like to see them bring back the walk of champions. Yes it takes a little more time but I do believe our champions past and present should be recognized.
