I just wanted to take a minute to talk about RI refereeing and how privileged I believe we are in RI. I was up in VT this past weekend and without being extremely harsh or over dramatic the refereeing was subpar to say the least (mechanics, mat presence, attitude and overall bias in some cases). We take time as an association to go over situational wrestling and develop strong referees. I can speak on behalf of our association and say that we have experienced referees who know the sport, follow it closely and strive to be fair and just in every situation. The reason I am posting this is because (and I never post anything) I was disheartened by the bias that was displayed on behalf of some referees that I witnessed while I was up there. All three teams that represented RI, Hendricken, Cumberland and Coventry can all attest to this and without question I believe. I know that our association has integrity and leaves bias at the door when they step onto a mat, whether it be here in RI or any other place in N.E. Hopefully this doesn't come off as sour grapes or is construed as anything other than an observers opinion who has been part of RI wrestling for the past 13 years.

As A parent and also having wrestled and been around wrestling for more than 25 yrs,I would have to say that you are right on about the out of State REFS,I was not @ that particular tournament but at several others this yr.Even though I am very vocal and supportive of our team here in RI as a parent,I think the refs here for the most part are great.(ps,speaking for myself and my big mouth,we always let you know from the stands when you miss a call,LOL...but thats just because we are so passionate about the sport.Overall a great big thumbs up for RI REFS...You all do a great job and thank you for your efforts...

Bob, I agree with you, RI has some really good refs, who leave their indifferences off the mat. We also have refs who are still in the works, and growing. I wasn't up in VT for the duals, but can attest to some bad refs from VT, and NH, I'm sure they have some good refs, I've just yet to see them. CT & MA also have very good and very bad refs. Just as with coaching, there's the coaches that yell and complain about everything that goes agaianst them, and the coaches that know the rules, and when to choose their battles. Not everyone is cut out to be a wrestler, not everyone is meant to be a coach, and not everyone should be a ref. I think some stick around for the finacial aspect, while others are there for the love of the sport.

The referees at the quad in Mt. Hope H.S last night were fantastic. As always the ref during the Cumberland vs north providence match made a horrible call in the 170 match . If he would have made the correct call , north providence would have gotten the win over Cumberland making them co-champs with mt hope

I would argue that if the NP kid didn't get a technical violation for unnecessary roughness it may have been different too. Or how about the takedown with 3 sec on the clock in the first?. Lots of what ifs...the refs still did a fantastic job.

The MAU refs were HOMERS! The athletes from RI were exposed to bias. Just a fact of life and learning experience as they enter maturity. We are very fortunate to have coaches that takes our boys to hold themselves to a higher standard that will bring them to compete in life. The take away should be that situations are all not fair and if you have done the preparation to be the the best, no regrets. As a parent, I thank all Coaches from RI who has influenced wrestlers to work hard on and off the mat.

I heard really bad stuff about the Vermont referring. I heard BH got screwed on countless calls against Mount Anthony. I also heard that the Dupree pin vs Hayes was very questionable. Two people told me that Dupree had his shoulders up while tilting Hayes and did not pin himself. Mind you I was not there and haven't seen the video. Either way the top RI refs do the states and with very limited mistakes. Should make for a great tournament
