Boston University will eliminate its wrestling program at the conclusion of the 2013-14 season, the school announced Monday.
Sadly for the wrestlers and coaching staff – including Carl Adams, who has been head coach of the Terriers for 32 years – the news was not some sort of cruel April Fools’ Day joke.
"This obviously been a very difficult decision to make," said BU’s Director of Athletics Mike Lynch. "I understand the impact this will have on our staff and students. However, we have to strategically use our resources in the most efficient and effective manner, and the decision to move forward without wrestling, though difficult, is the right one for Boston University."
Senior Vice President Todd Klipp added that, "Like all University academic and administrative units, the Department of Athletics is constantly assessing its strategic priorities. That process can necessitate making difficult decisions like this one."
All student-athletes currently receiving wrestling scholarships will have those scholarships honored for the remainder of their undergraduate careers at BU. Wrestlers seeking to continue their athletic careers at other schools will be eligible to transfer immediately under NCAA guidelines.
Nearly half of the 25-man wrestling team roster are juniors; because the program will continue one more season, these members of the Class of 2014 can complete their academic and wrestling careers at Boston University.
Coach Adams came to BU in 1981 after serving as an assistant at Iowa State for six seasons, then as head coach at University of Rhode Island for two years. Under his leadership, the Terriers compiled a 292-195-7 overall record, garnering ten conference titles, most recently in 1994. In the past three decades, BU has sent 61 wrestlers to the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships a total of 96 appearances; four earned All-American honors.
Prior to his coaching career, Adams was a standout wrestler at Iowa State, competing for head coach Harold Nichols and assistant coach Les Anderson. Compiling an impressive 94-8 record, Adams was a two-time NCAA champ at 158 pounds (1971, 1972), a three-time NCAA All-American, and three-time Midlands champ. He was also the Cyclones’ captain his junior and senior seasons. Adams graduated from ISU in 1972, earning both bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
Adams’ contributions to the sport go beyond his wrestling and coaching careers. He is the author of three instructional books as well as a series of technique videos, and the creator of the Adam wrestling takedown machine used in high schools and colleges.
Adams is a member of a number of Halls of Fame, including the Glen Brand Hall of Fame at the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum in Waterloo, Iowa.
