Today is a very sad day for many within the Rhode Island high School wrestling community. For those who don’t know, George Schmeider has passed on. His sudden illness that started back in August seem to have won out.
George was a very vibrant and dedicated man to his favorite sport of all time. The sport of wrestling. He loved it. You could tell (whether a person knew him or not) that wrestling was more than just a sport to him. His kids that he coached all loved him. If you ask any of his kids that were coached underneath him I’m sure they will tell you stories that would make you laugh and cry from just laughing so much… George was special in many ways and he will surely be missed by those who knew him.
In this most difficult time of mourning let us dedicate some stories of those who would like to share with us about some of their experiences with George.
For me, I would like to say that I admired his tenacity and zeal for his sport and recognized that because of it, he was a driven coach that made others around him very contagious to that same spirit that he manifested. RIP , Mr George Schmeider…
Sincerely,
Greg Travers
Please to those who are believers in God, Let our prayers be partitioned to the father of all creation and ask that His hand be on the family and friends of George and all those whom he has come in contact with.

George was a huge part of RI wrestling over the last 20 years. His motivation to make those wrestlers that were lucky enough to be around him and his belief in getting a stronger state of wrestling was amazing. He has impacted many and we are all lucky to have known him. Thoughts and prayers to his family.

RIP George,George and I became really close in the past 5 or 6 years. We knew each other years before that though. We were close because of wrestling. The passion he had for the sport was phenominal and the lenght he took it to for the young kids was unreal. It would be nothing for him to load his van up with kids and go to John Knapps place to train and come back and drop them all off at each of there houses. For all that dont know that takes about 6 1/2 hours. And he would do that twice a week.I would watch as he would help students with there teachers and work so they could pass there class or even graduate. He was always there for any kid no matter what.I know because he was always there for my son,and my son loved him for it.Greg Travers said it well he was truley inspirational. My prayers go out to his family and children, may God be with them thru this trying times.George you are loved and will be missed terribly.

In all my years of coaching I have never seen one person have such an impact on RI wrestling. It was all due to George's commitment and love of this sport. He traveled with athletes everywhere. I am extremely saddened that I didn't go with him to more of these events. Take the time to read his posts on this site alone to see all that he has done for every wrestler in this state. I always found George to be the funniest guy in the room because of the pleasure he got in making others smile. His desire to do things for others was overwhelming. He was a remarkable person and his presence will forever be missed. Though I was friends with George I will always feel the loss of time I can no longer spend with someone I know I should of spent more time with. There is not always a tomorrow so do what is right today. My prayers and sympathies go out to his family and friends at this time of sadness.
