Can anyone please explain to me the new divisions, for some reason it does not make sense to me. I hear the buzz about ewg, but yet they are in the weakest division? Why didn't their coach move up to division 1? They are in the same division with teams that can barely fill a full team? Does middletown really deserve to be in division 1, along with wooonsocket? Cranston East has a feeder program and has won state titles in the past, are they really a division 2 school? I give respect to johnston and even though they were in division 2, they knew they belonged in division 1. They made 5 new divisions, why wouldnt they just make 6 and do 3 divisions? Does anyone has any answers?

Can't answer all but will answer some. The league did not want 3 divisions. I think this was foolish but hey, who am I to say. Didn't need 6 just strait 3 with football like schedules where you have a few byes and need to fill them. It helps the D1 schools with weighins and out of state matches. The bottom 1/4 of D1 last year and the top 1/3 of D2 were all very comparable. The bottom of d2 should really be its own entity.
As for team placements per RIIL rules a team that after their ranking systems didn't fall in top 2 or bottom 2 could not move unless a team wanted to flip. The new RIIL rankings were based off 8 years of records and school size. This restricted EWG who has a tough team for this year and next (and last year as well) but the 3 seasons previous they won very few matches and had very low numbers. So those two things put them in the lower end of rankings. In this case Johnston wanted up. Barrington went down. But then Smithfield also got to go down do to some funky realignment decision that happened to greatly benefit them and the coaches association league liaison. In the same regard this screwed Woonsocket and Middletown, both of which have had good seasons in the last 8 years (Middletown won d2 several of those) and woon was in d1 several of those winning seasons and has a huge school population. Cranston East has been up and down they do have a youth system but their feeder system is gone... Haven't ha middle school sports in years, this has hurt east more than west. Also west has been getting out of district help the last 6 years to really help make up for lack of feeder program.
In the end I still think we should have 3 divisions, coach have too much say in wrestling unlike any other sport. There will always be surprise teams like EWG who will have a couple good classes and thrive on them. But to get sustainable results and compete in the top division year in and year out you also need numbers. Look at some of those schools, EP BH, cumb and Cov have some of the largest population of boys in the state, clearly that helps the programs. Those 11 top schools should be in their own division there is a consistent top tier, middle tier, and Lower tier that struggles to fill all 14 weight classes. 3 tiers 3 divisions would have been great.

What was wrong with it back in the 90s when it was divisions A, B, and C, each with two subdivisions? To me, that worked just fine. B and C had sectionals, which I thought were great (I understand many wanted them gone and got their way), but RI doesn't necessarily have to bring the sectionals back. All I'm saying is, why not just go back to the old class A, B, and C?
