This was only mentioned in passing last night at the state banquet and no one seemed to notice but I think its a pretty big deal - RI Heavyweight State Champion Jonah Aurelio went to the Junior Nationals last week in Virginia Beach and took a 5th in the nation. This officially makes him an All-American.

I wasn't there, but I think you're right, that should have been given more attention. Congrats to Jonah Aurelio as he accomplished what few RIers have - all-American status. It may have been given little attention sadly because, in my opinion, RI doesn't pay that much attention anymore to national tournament settings. That team RI that has started up hopefully will change things, but for a while, gone were the days of a big RI contingent heading to the NHSCA Senior Nationals. This year, one or two RIers headed to senior nationals (correct me if I'm wrong). I remember 14 years ago Brian Ferreira, Bryon Nelson, Xenio Yearwood, Percy Smith, Adam Morelli, Justin Lewis, Matt Erni, Nate Faria, and others I can't remember right now all going together (rooming together, staying in adjacent rooms, the whole bit) to senior nationals. Again, I could be wrong, but I feel like that atmosphere is gone.

Couldnt agree with you more. Nationals is what it is all about. Taking RI wrestling to the next level. Competing at the next level. That group of guys did travel together and only two kids from my class traveled four years later (myself- Jon Egan and Joe Turrilli) .... great experience. Bums me out more guys arent doing this anymore.

Team ri took 7 guys to pop and flo and it was a great experience. This coming weekend team ri is combining forces with mayo to showcase ri talent against the best clubs in all of new England and Nj and Ny. Team ri has 9 of our state champs on the team we r wrestling at wadsworth on Saturday and Sunday. I'll release the line up and schedule as soon as I get it. College coaches this may be a great opportunity to see guys from NJ ( iron horse) and several Ny clubs right in your back yard

this was our second year at NHSCA in virignia This is truly one of the best tournaments in the Nation hands down- it was an awesome showing when all these guys showed up this year--watching Nate, Joao and Steve all compete in this tournament was great--seeing all of the other RI kids down there truly made an impact for us--we look forward to attending again next year--

I was in Virignia and was fotunate to see Jonah wrestle---he looked great - I am sad to hear that there wasn't more attention given to this accomplishment! There are only 8 All Americans crowned per weight class at this tournament out of what I heard was well over 2500 wrestlers ---there were 700 wrestlers there just as Juniors!-CONGRATULATIONS JONAH!!!!! those of us who were there know how tough it is to do what you did!!!!

Gene Mills isn't really a legit Nat tournament. It maybe called the eastern Nationals but have you ever looked to see how to qualify? They will take anyone who will pay and they dont allow girls to wrestle against the boys because its backed by the YMCA, and the majority of brackets only have 8-10 kids in them. Many of the kids that placed at Gene Mills couldn't even place at New Englands, and it's because of small brackets and some even had 2 or 3 kids from the same clubs. It's basically the same as the Marshwoods tournament in Maine, except they have the word National in their name. Shouldnt even be mentioned in same discussion as the NHSCA tournament.
