This past weekend saw a large number of wrestlers from New England wrestling and placing in NCAA Division 1 tournaments that are qualifiers for the NCAA Wrestling Championships March . It was already reported that Corey Peltier (2X RI champ, 2X National Prep runner-up) won the 184 lb. weightclass in the ACC tournament for Maryland, and will go to nationals. Justin Belanger (3x RI champ, 2X NE place-winner) of Sacred Heart (CT) finished second at 141 lbs. in the East Regional, but unfortunately did not automatically qualify for nationals. These are the only two RI wrestlers at Divsion 1 schools that I am aware of; anyone know of any others? BTW, note both are originally from Exeter-West Greenwich, though Corey went to Hendricken before Blair Academy.
There were numerous other NE wrestlers in action at national qualifiers, perhaps the most I can remember in any one season. Most prominent was Robert Hamlin of Lehigh, who won the 184 lb. class in the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association, and is ranked second in the nation in this weight (VT, 3X NE Champ). Other NE placers in the EIWA were: Aaron Kalil, Navy, 3rd at 125 (NH, 2X NE Champ); Rollie Peterkin, Pennsylvania, 3rd at 133 and ranked 12th nationally (MA, 2X NE Champ and Fargo champ); Bryce Saddoris, Navy, 2nd at 157 lbs. (MA, prep champ); DJ Meagher, Cornell, 4th at 157 (NH, 2X NE champ, NHSCA place-winner); Sean Bilodeau, 8th 157 (MA, National Prep champ, Fargo OW); Andrew Knapp, Harvard, 6th at 285 (MA-?). In the Eastern Wrestling League, note Chris Honeycutt who is ranked No. 1 nationally at 184 for Edinboro was champ, and while he graduated from high school in Ohio, he has Massachusetts roots. NE grads who competed in the EWL were: Eric Morrill, 3rd at 133 for Edinboro and ranked 15th nationally (NH, 3X NE runner-up); Nick Flannery, DNP at 133 for Cleveland State (NE Champ, beat Desilets last year); Matt Donohue, 6th at 157 Cleveland State (MA, NE runner-up); and Shawn Fendone, 2nd at 197 for Edinboro (MA, 2X NE Champ).
Other noteworthy conference results were Sean Boyle, 4th at 125 in the Big Ten tourney (MA, NE Champ and National Prep Champ, Fargo placewinner); Tyler Banks, 3rd at 157 in the Colonial Athletic Association (CT, NE runner-up); Jimmy Hamel, 4th at 184 for Buffalo in the Mid-American Conference (MA, 2X NE runner-up) and Brian Sheehan, 4th at 197 (wrestling up two weightclasses) for Buffalo (MA, 2X NE champ).
Feel free to report any other Division I wrestlers from New England you know of. I'll catch up on Dvision II and III wrestlers at a later time.
