Corey Peltier, former RI state champ, all-american at Blair Academy, and now wrestling for the University of Maryland, was crowned 2011 ACC champion at 184 yesterday. As an automatic qualifier, he is now on his way to the NCAA Division I nationals. The number 3 seed, Peltier won a hard fought 4-2 match in sudden victory over John Dickson of Virginia Tech to make it into the finals. There, he defeated Diego Bencomo of Duke U. for the title. By the way, Duke scored only 9 team points in the tournament...all by Bencomo. Peltier hasn't been ranked at 184 all season, but this accomplishment may push him into the top 20. That would be very cool to see.

I've had intermat.com's streaming coverage of the big tens on all day while I was working. After day one (up to finals and consi semis), Penn State and Iowa are in a dead heat with only one point separating them. Minnesota is right behind them. The best matches of the tournament thus far both involved Iowa - Montell Marion (Iowa) and Mike Thorn (Minn.) had a war where they were just advancing and attacking the entire 7 minutes, it was wild. Marion threw Thorn to his back for 4, with 20 seconds left, but Thorn escaped and took Marion down to tie it up as time expired. In SV, they went at it again, just super action. Deep shot funk, roll, funk, Thorn finds himself in a modified fireman's carry and dumps Marion for the victory. The other match was defending NCAA champion Andrew Howe (Wis.) and Aaron Janssen (Iowa). On paper, this was a mismatch, but someone forgot to tell Janssen. They went at it, an incredible back and forth match. Overtimes were the same, constantly attacking getting wrapped up in funky positions that led to stalemates (both narrowly missing takedowns at various times). Howe finally pulled it out when he escaped as the buzzer sounded ending the second set of 30 second TBs. Just great stuff!
