Dear Principal, Athletic Director and RIIL Wrestling Coach:
URGENT
The Freshman and JV tournaments are going to be split:
The new days and times are:
Junior Varsity Tournament at Coventry High School
Friday, February 11, 2011 1. Arrive at 3:30pm 2. Weigh-In: 3:30pm – 4:15pm 3. Wrestling begins at 5:00pm
Saturday, February 12, 2011 Same Schedule
Freshman Tournament at Coventry High School
Saturday, February 19, 2011 Weight-in: 8:00am – 9:00am Wrestling: Begins at 10am
The change is necessary to protect the health and safety of the student-athletes. There are 479 registered wrestlers for the FR and JV tournament instead of the normal 300-320.
It would be a logistical nightmare to attempt to have both tournaments run concurrently: weight-ins, gym space, time to run matches, etc.
PLEASE: DO NOT BRING FRESHMAN WRESTLERS
- Only students who are working tables, etc. will be admitted free. All others would have to pay admission fee.
Dick Magarian Bob DiMuccio
This was sent out to all schools today!!

This is idiotic and down right wrong!!! How can a league notify several hundred people and all there families that they are going to make a change like this? This affects way to many peoples lives to make this type of decision. It is a holiday weekend and lots of athletes could have been told by Their coaches that they are done by this point. It is the start of vacation week and many people have plans. I for one sick of how this sport is run from an Administrative level

The increase in numbers is a result of cancelling the Sectionals for one...(Which wasn't a good decision by the RIIL). Second, Coaches had to make a decision with some of there wrestlers who would be borderline 10th/11th seeds for D2. They could not risk holding out a wrestler from the JVs in hope that he had enough powerpoints to make it into the states. At least they will wrestle in at least one post season tour. If they didnt at the time of the seeding meeting, then they would have to tell them they didnt qualify for states and also missed the JV states because they were hoping to get in.
I agree w/ Helper with how the sport is ran in certain areas......But breaking into 2 tournaments is best, although an inconvenience, for that many wrestlers...

How many freshman won't make next week due to vacation plans? RIIL responsible for this mess that they have created through their greed for money.

...and don't you love how they stick the little 'all others would have to pay admission fee' in at the end. They have always been all about the money at the door....and the tone is unreal - all those kids have to pay that admission if they show up...and you watch them snap at people as they come in for cash....isn't it time for them to retire?
