National Rankings
Last year I predicted that Gabe Bouyssou would finish his Senior Campaign ranked in the top 10 nationally. After his NHSCA performance, he returns to the Flo rankings after dropping out at the end of December, to #9 @144. Matscouts has had him ranked consistently in the top twenty all season @150 for a short time as high as #4, he ends the year ranked at #17, which I would argue is too low. But freestyle season is coming up, so don’t be surprised if he ends the year ranked higher on Flo, Matscouts rankings for this season 2023-2024 are final!
No other RI wrestler has been a 2X NHSCA Champion, Congrats Gabe!!
You heard it here first, don't be shocked if Gabe upends Bassett if they meet at UWW ‘s!
Joseph Joyce has been ranked on Flo since his performance at Ironman, where he pinned a Fargo finalist and beat two Ohio DI placers, he ends the season ranked #17 @138 on Flo, and he has several strong wins at national tournaments including a win over 3rd at beast Ortega NJ, he surprised some by beating 2X NE champ Tildsley. With 9 seniors ahead of him we can assume he is close to being in the top 10 entering his junior year when this current group ages out. Joe is only the second wrestler to achieve a national ranking by his sophomore season in the last twenty years the other one was his brother Jacob Joyce. Before the Joyce brothers, it was Pat Feeley back in 2003.
David Perez is not yet nationally ranked on Flo or Matscouts which is puzzling he beat nationally ranked #19 Thomas Verrette and #15 Carson Walsh, and his only two losses on the season were at Ironman where he lost to NHSCA finalist Roark 3-2 on a stall call, Roark soundly beat Sidney Tildsey at NHSCA'S his only other loss was to West Virginia commit Gunner Andrick. He is ranked however on Wrestling USA All-class, SB Live, and on Takedown Media two of the newer national ranking polls. The issue is that 132 is the deepest weight in the country, Perez coincidentally is the highest ranked big boarder from RI #34 on Wrestling USA Magazine for comparison's sake Joyce who is ranked @138 is #44 for the class of 2026. Also, look for Perez to be close to the top ten when this Senior group graduates.
Team: Ponaganset finished the season #46 in the fab 50, with 10,700 plus HS programs in the US, that's impressive, when you get into the top 50, and start comparing apples to apples, you'll notice that all teams in the top 50, even the top 100 are prep, private or public school teams that draw kids from all over the country or region or they have kids from surrounding districts attending their schools. Basically, they are national or regional all-star teams, outside of NE, this is the norm for all ranked programs. So as much as it bothers fans in RI, it is a common occurrence across the rest of the country. That being said, Ponaganset only graduates 1 Senior, and I see them being a top-30-ranked team going into next season. They currently have 6 NHSCA All-Americans on their roster, with 5 big boarders according to USA Wrestling Magazine's April issue!

CONGRATS ALL AROUND RI was impressive, though I believe we are coming to the end of what I would call a golden Era in Rhode Island Wrestling!
