still the Rose Bowl of in-season New England high school wrestling IMO, the George Bossi Tournament in Lowell, MA on Dec. 22-23 fielded another stacked line-up of 93 teams from around NE (though I don't know that there were any Maine entries). Coventry finished fifth in what is as close to a New England championship as we have before March. Newton of CT took first, followed by MA stalwarts Haverhill and Shawsheen, with Bedford, NH fourth and Coventry fifth. It's such a tough tourney that only Shawsheen had more than one champ, as the NE champ/finalist Tildsley brothers won at 138 and 144. Coventry had a champ in defending NE titlist Peyton Ellis at 126, while Stone Farnsworth was third at 120, Ason Jones fourth at 285, and Sebastian Armstrong seventh at 138. Central and LaSalle were also entered, with Central looking strong to the quarterfinals but unable to pick up a place-winner. Oddly, Ivan Mazariego beat Armstrong 10-7 in the Round of 16 but then defaulted while leading 5-2 in his quarterfinal match and had to medical forfeit out of the consolation rounds while Bash fought back to 7th. Thomas Lynch of LaSalle also made it to the Round of 16 at 138 but wound up losing in the blood round.
