There was some very good Rhode Island participation in the annual George Bossi Lowell Holiday Tournament Dec. 27-28, which I maintain is still the best (and biggest) in-season high school wrestling tournament in New England. The three RI teams all came from the Providence area and produced three finalists among them. Most notable was Hope High with Isael Perez who finished 2nd at 170 to NE placer Rafael Knapp of Algonquin (MA) who is ranked No. 1 in New England at this weight, and Imonal Tavares who was edged 7-5 by Brendan Gilchrist of Norwalk, CT and also a NE place-winner and top-ranked at 195 this season. Hope also had Joseph Hiraldo finish fourth at 113 and Edmir Monteiro who placed fifth at 138, and overall finished fifth in the team race in this massive (87 team) tourney. Hope was not only the top finishing RI school but also the top non-Mass team (and one of only two schools from outside MA to crack the top ten). LaSalle had a finalist as well with No. 1 seed Ryan Conlan getting edged 2-0 by Peter Rincan of Bedford, NH in the 113 lb. final. Conlan was LS's only placer but several other Maroon wrestlers had winning records in the tourney. So did Central, which did not produce a place-winner but had half its squad with two or more wins.
As always Lowell serves as a pretty fair preview of some of the top wrestlers in New England and how they might fare in the NE championships in March. There were nine of Max Schwartz's top 1 or 2 New England contenders entered at Lowell and all but one of them won, including Yander Morales of Andover, MA at 106, James and Sidney TiLdsley of Shawsheen Tech, MA at 126 and 138, respectively, Nathan Blanchette of Central Catholic, MA at 182, Knapp, Gilchrist, Patrick Deslauriers of Ashland, MA at 220, and finally Thomas Brown of Chelmsford, MA, who beat NE champ at 220 and recently Max' top 285 contender Hayden Kaye-Kuter of Milford, MA. Actually, four of the top five 285 pounders from Max's rankings were entered and all finished in the top four, though with some rearranging of the rankings.
