Cumberland continues to impress in the early season, particularly as a tournament team. On Dec. 27-28 the Clippers took second in a strong 38 team challenge that was easily dominated by defending New England team champions St. Johns Prep. Cumberland just edged third-place Taunton 175.5 to 174.5 and did it with no finalists (I note they had no finalists in the 2022 RI State Championships and I could not recall the last time that had happened). What they do have though is a tough veteran lineup with a few young guys adding in. Cumby wound up with third placers Jake St Goddard at 145 and Titre at 182, Schonhoff 4th at 138, Raposo 5th at 220 and Bagleri 6th at 106. they also got scoring from pretty much everyone else on the team. There was a Rhode Island champion in the tourney as Andrew McCarthy of Mt. Hope took first at 126 lbs, with teammate Elijah Bland 7th at 132. Another RI entry, the Middletown/Rogers/Portsmouth co-op, had Max Connell 5th at 120.
