As I noted in the Power Points section Hendricken won this again, with more points apparently from their JV team than their frosh (5 jv finalists, 3 frosh). Cumberland which returned their entire varsity team this season finished second, so their legendary depth appears intact. And Cranston West finished a distant yet solid third, edging North Providence and Burrillville for 4th and 5th, so in the near future these latter teams may regain much of the success they had in the previous decade. Some interesting match-ups were already reported in the Power Points: Robichaud (Co) beat Sclama (BH) 6-4 in OT in the 113 Frosh finals; Cooper (Ho) pinned Husing (Ch) in the first round at Frosh 106, with Cooper winning the class and Husing 3rd; Burke (Pi) defeated Lundsten (Ba) 12-10 in the quarterfinals at 132, Burke winning the class with Lundsten 3rd; and Zarrella (NK) pinned Vessey (Cov) in the Frosh 120 finals.
I suppose these are the most interesting match-ups because we're seeing wrestlers who are already varsity stars meeting in the Freshmen State tournament. I noticed that for the second year in a row Ponaganset did not enter their star freshman starter, this time Hood. I'm editorializing here but after decades of seeing varsity stars entered by most teams I just don't think this is the purpose of a state wrestling tournament exclusively for freshmen. I remember back in the 1970's (yes, I'm very old) when the RIIL or whatever it was back then split the freshman out of the junior varsity state wrestling championships. The year before Hendricken won both with mostly the same line-up, the team that in 1976 would win the RI & NE championships as seniors. So the league said let's do separate tournaments for frosh and jv's with no more than 4 varsity wins - only the same restriction didn't apply to the freshmen. So over the decades we've seen State varsity place-winners, champs, and even NE place-winners warm-up in a tournament where they often face first year wrestlers. Why? I understand the coaches wanting to get their youngest varsity starters some extra work with States coming up, and they are legitimately freshmen, but does anyone think that Adolpho Betancur got any better from his 0:20, 0:23 and 2:41 minute tournament? This is a wrestler who will likely place high in the States this week at 285 and could place in the New Englands the week after, which is of course remarkable for a freshman at this weight. Believe me, I'm not bashing Hendricken, I probably have more connections to that school than anyone on this site. Now that being said, I need someone to explain to me how 2X State place-winner Iacobucci was eligible to wrestle and win as a jv, since he must have double digit wins this season between tournaments and filling in for Fallon in duals. Is there a limit on wins for the jv tournament anymore? I understand that this is a good wrestler with no spot on the team for the varsity states behind Fallon and Williams, but is he truly a junior varsity wrestler? And again, I love Hendricken. Just posting.
