Hendricken edged Chariho for the combined freshmen and junior varsity State Wrestling Championships on Feb. 17. BH garnered 237.5 points, mostly on the strength of its freshman lineup (five frosh champs and one runner-up; Jv champ Eubanks who's listed as a freshman), while Chariho had 229 based more on jv strength with four champs and a runner-up, plus frosh champ J. Dougherty. So two of the state's best teams this season should have plenty of ammunition for next season and some time to come. North Providence was a distant 3rd with 125 points, while North Kinstown was 4th with 118.5 and South Kingstown 5th at 113.5 points. Coventry and Burrillville tied at 105 (Coventry didn't enter frosh varsity starters Mastrofine or Sanford), with Cumberland 8th at 99.5 - a little down from their usual show of future talent, but then they have literally their entire line-up back next year. Toll Gate and Cranston West round out the top 10. I noted that No. 1 ranked Ponaganset only finished 13th, but did not enter freshman stars Joyce and Cook who would have been likely champs.
Some interesting match-ups in the frosh tourney. At 145 lbs. state varsity contenders Reid of Hendricken and Matarese of North Providence met in the quarterfinals, with Matarese winning 3-1 in sudden death OT. They each went on to pin their way to 1st and 3rd respectively. Reid had beaten Matarese 5-2 in a quad match on Feb. 7, so it would certainly be interesting if they meet in the varsity States next weekend and develop a rivalry that could last 4 years. At 132 lbs. Hendricken had the top three finishers - I don't think I've seen that before - but their champ wasn't Keaney who's been mentioned as a place-contender in next week's States, it was Isiah Guererro who beat Keaney 3-1 in the semis, then beat Maroney, who began the season as BH's starter at 132, 3-2 in the finals. So who is Hendricken's entrant at 132 next Friday? Sure, it's not as riveting as Ponaganset's decision on its line-up from 138-182, but do you go with the power points or go with the hot wrestler?
