Looks like a lot of good early match-ups to watch. Here's a brief outlook:
103- Can't believe Altieri gets Monserrat of Methuen in the quarters (opponents permitting; this disclaimer goes with all picks). Monserrat has dominated Mass. and NE as a frosh and beat Altieri last year in NE Middle School champs. Should be a great rematch. Kirkegard was 5th in NE last year is in the other bracket. 112- Two big breaks for Matia: defending champ Bridson in other bracket, and Salgado of Mass. didn't make weight for Opens, after beating Gauthier in Divsion 1. Alvarez probably gets winner of Gauthier-Keane, then Bridson. And there's Mui. Good luck. 119- Even without Shai, this is just a brutal weightclass with three returning NE placewinners and other studs. O'Boyle was supposed to be the guy to beat, then lost in Mass. Open finals. And he gets Bryant first match? Wow. Burrows probably gets Myers of Lowell first match, who was only NE-runnerup last year. Then there's Hale, Sughrue, the other Keane, Rasque. . . it just goes on. Good as Burrows and Meyers are, they'll be hard-pressed just to place (again for Meyers). 125- Brutal, Part II. Visconti and Buco have been beating up on each other in Mass. and NE for two seasons, and both could make finals. Vicente has Gilman early (beat Shoneil last year in a tourney). Shoneil likely gets Buco, who beat him in NE consys last season, if he gets by Pierre-Saint. Then there's Tilbe. . . you get the idea. Still, there's nobody here that Lariviere can't beat, and I look for him to go higher than Vicente, just on experience. 130- Not much drop-off here either. Mike Meyers' road to four NE finals goes by James Carroll of Mass. if that Carroll gets by Calixto. Other bracket has Ed Carroll who upset Calixto in Conn. Open and who I recall beat Mike in an off-season tourney. Also don't overlook Farrar of NH. Travers and Labrie are young but have the ability to hang with some of these guys. 135- This could be Ricondo's to lose. He's got Brandon Walsh, James Smith (his only loss this season) and 4-time NE qualifier Matt Morris over in the other bracket, and he's already beaten Jeff Cole on his side. Getting by Libby of Mass. will be a huge first match. And Vinnie has NE experience too. 140- Everet is the man here. He will, of course, have to convince Mr. Owens first, then probably either Mssrs. Crabtree or Mitchell. 145- RI prospects probably go down from here on up. Jarrell has some good NE experience, and thefavorable happenstance of the bigger Visconti and Tanner in the other bracket. Doherty or Muntz probably his biggest obtacles to semis. 152-It's the Jake Odell show and we're just visiting. Otherwise, not a dominating class, and Pratt and Gaudiana could make some noise. 160- OK, who annoys Nate Lawrence and Jacob Powers before the finals? Burrows has New England paper, Georges beat him, and really no one else has been that consistent. Therrien and Straight from Mass., Covone and Carter from Conn. may fill in places. 171- And another Lawrence from Timberlane. Can they even have a New England tournament without twins any more? Unfortunately, Nick Salois gets the only man to beat him at 171 lbs. this seaon in the quarters. Heavy sigh. Larence decked Nick in an earlier tournament, but I don't know that there's anyone else he can't beat in this weightclass. The Mass. 171's have been beating on each other all season, with Rodriquez winning out of relative nowhere, and the Conn. guys haven't been overly impessive. Peltier has at least a shot at semis where he could face Beck again. 189- Zeramby has had a good year, but Vic Avery in his bracket is almost untouchable, and that's if Jason gets by Aren Norman. Lacroix faces Kyle Humphries in his first round who actually gave Avery a match. Face facts: the bigger states have more and better big boys. 215- Fortunately Zicuis doesn't have three-time NHSCA All American Patick Gillen of Conn. in his bracket. Unfortunately, he gets to watch Ken Vollaro (whose brother is nationally ranked heavy out of Florida) take on Battles-Santos of Mass. (fifth last year), and if he's lucky he gets the winner. 285- I think Aurelio is the real thing who has done well in out-of-state competition and will represent RI well in this tourney, but there's just too much talent right now. Undefeated Smerlas of Mass. and Tammany of Timberlane (third last year) face off in one bracket, while Jonah gets undefeated Conn. champ Demichile and Dwight of NH on his side. Oh, and watch Webb of Mt. Anthony who's freshman but doesn't wrestle like one.
So that's one man's view. Feel free to give your own picks or critique mine. And remember, while RI usually expects to do well in the lightweight at NE's, there's often one upper weight RI wrestler who surprises by placing in his first New Englands (remember Lincoln's Anthony Joyce, 4th at 285 last year?). So who's your sleeper? Atlanta Al
