Brute’s Empire Nationals Rochester, New York
March 15th, 2009 Rhode Island Wrestlers
Twelve hours of driving and fourteen hours of wrestling is what this weekend was about for seven Rhode Island wrestlers.
Matt Martinez, Jay Davol, Tim DiLorenzo, Jemery King, Jordan Levelle, Jason Zerembry and Justin Zerembry made the trip and had the opportunity to compete along with upwards of 1000 wrestlers against teams and clubs from WV, New York, New Jersey, Penn, Ohio, Michigan, Maryland, Conn, and others hoping to place top six to come home and call themselves All Americans from the tournament.
Rhode Island was represented very well as five out of the seven reached their goals.
In the Cadet division Jordan lead the way in a pack weight class, setting the bar real high wrestling his way to the 3rd and 4th match only to lose to last years Empire National’s Champion.
Jason Zerembry also battled through tough opponents finishing 4th along side his team mate.
Jeremy King who might have been in one of the toughest school boy brackets pounded with several state champions throughout the entire day in a jammed pack bracket finishing 5th.
Matt Martinez used his speed and strength against a level of competition he has yet to face in his young wrestling career. At the end of the day Matt held his hand high with a 4th place finish.
Finally, saving our highest medal for last, giving up 10 lbs in just about every tournament he has entered. 7th Grader, Independent wrestler from St. Margaret’s, Jay Davol took the top spot winning GOLD. This young wrestler knows how to bring his A game and rise to the top with his skill and poise. This isn’t the 1st time we got to call Jay a National Champion, Last year Jay also won the NHSCA National in VA Beach.
On a personal note I’d like to thank this great team of wrestlers for giving it all they had this weekend and representing themselves and their state well.
