THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
Over 1,000 people attend Providence Rivalry Match at Rhode Island College
The Providence Rivalry is the premier wrestling dual meet event in the state. Both sides of the mat had bleachers packed with from Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hamphire, and New York. JWU won this year’s cup 23-16. The teams have gone 2-2 over the last four years.
The rivalry started at 125 as JWU’s nationally ranked Bobby Jordan technical falled Saylee Phongsampanh, who fought off his back to avoid getting pinned. The match of the night came when Kyle Lake took one for the team by bumping up to fill a gap at 184. Lake cracked Dae-Shawn Brown by dominiating on top late in the match. Lake did everything he could for his team to keep the Anchormen in the match. Shawn Giblin, Ricondo Cole, and Kyle Lake were all victorious on their senior night. The 157 pound match came at the end as the gracious alum of RIC, JWU coahes Morris and Allen, allowed Chris Kelly to wrestle at the end due to his police physical exam, as he will be graduating and is looking to join local law enforcement agencies.
Kelly needed a major to tie the team score which would have given the Anchormen the win with criteria for most wins and the cup. However, Kelly’s opponent Grippi got out to an early lead and shut the match down to give the crosstown visitors the win 23-16. There were eight wrestlers from RI on the mat from both squads. “This is a special night for wrestling in RI, and I am very proud of the turnout from all over,” said Coach Jones.
RIC headed down to Bristol for a Friday night fight. Chris Kelly go the only win as he pinned the Zach Marcoullier in the third. The Anhormen dropped three straight one point matches early on at 133 as Masi almost upset Leduc, Dorman lost a close one to Cochoran, and Costa lost by riding time to Downes. Georges also had a tie match at 285 until a mistake cost him at the end.
