the best coaches are the guys who are the best TEACHERS. that means lots of things, like encouraging each and every kid on jv to love wrestling (instead of ignoring them or treating them like dirt), building relationships with frosh and sophs who are not stars but who could be if they decice to wrestle year round, situational wrestling (instead of having kids to mindless "drills", haha), at least one day per week of film study, and bottom line is having one plan tailored to each kid of what skill he needs to add to his set that week. is this so hard? for some teams, unfortunately, we are no where's near close....
recent success of EWG is tribute to superior coaching/teaching. same with cumberland and bh over the years. the truly great coaches are teachers first and foremost. they build programs, with focus on developing each and every individual kid. as for the "match-day tacticians," well, we all know what that's really about. good luck with that.

Congrats Hawks! I was at the match and will say that all thou the score indicates a a blow out I can tell you that with thee exception off 2 or 3 matches they were all extremely close and exciting i also thought there would be a larger crowd for such a big match .as for public schools being tougher at tourneys I will say that poster doesn't know much about Hendricken wrestlers. I'm pretty sure they won all but 1 tournament they entered this year . I will say the coaching staff deserves all the credit for getting these kids prepared and focused . Go Hawks

dsnow, Before you say that BH wrestlers aren't as tough as their public school competitors maybe you should look at what they accomplished this season. They ended 15-0 in D1 outscoring their opponents by 637 pts, while achieving decisive wins over both D1 South Champ Johnston and Cumberland. A loss that ended Cumberland's very impressive undefeated streak. I almost never post, but I don't think it is fair to say any team could done any of that without possessing toughness. Good Luck to all at States.

I think all private schools have an advantage seeing that most parents with money send their kids there and im not saying not to give credit to these kids . Theres always better equipment and essentials where there is money gratz to all kids and there feats no matter who they are and where they go

frequentwatch not to sound harsh but I completely disagree with your statement that private schools have an advantage in wrestling just because they pay to go to school. And really what type of equiptment could be better at a private school as opposed to a public one? There isn't much equiptment in wrestling to begin with so I don't see where there cold be an advantage. The only thing that separates a great wrestling program from just a decent one is who works the hardest in practice. The amount of money that is payed to go to school has nothing to do with it.

What seperates great programs from good and good from bad? First and foremost, numbers, you need numbers. Now kids have to work twice as hard for a varsity spot. Coaches can utilize they're line-up better. YES you do need good coaching, who has feeder programs, youth programs, all plays a role. Vo-tech, and private schools do get they're fair share of talent, but the work must still go into the practice room. Obviously BH doesn't have this huge advantage, or Cumby, and CW wouldn't have ruled that division and states for so long.

Cumberland has done a tremendous job with there feeder program and Northeast elite but as far as CW if it wasn't for there votech program they wouldn't have been able to recruit the atheletes they have had in the past 4or5 years.

Great word choice... Recruit. Obviously some schools have an advantage. To Dake, maybe not equipment but how about more paid coaches, more facilities, more money for tournaments, ect... All that costs money.

Spectator2 I should probably stay quiet, but that votech program was there for decades and is there now. The West team began it's success 8 years ago when they first finished second to Cumberland. They were undefeated in dual meets that year and went two more seasons without a dual meet loss. This attracted many talented athletes that could attend the school, but to say that the cause of the success was recruiting is not correct. I know all those athletes that developed and worked tirelessly to build the program to what it was. They were dedicated wrestlers who believed in the program.

West rose from the trenches of Div C-2 when Tim Almonte was the coach, he took them straight to D1 and made them contenders, after his departure I believe Jesse Bean took over for 1 yr before Coach Cleason came in. West did build from the ground up, was they're vo-tech program a big factor, maybe, but in the same sense Chariho is vo-tech and where are they?

I wasn't trying to rain on anybody's parade all i was trying to say was most of the public schools did not have the luxury of a vo-tech program to bring in studs.

Obviously as Hendricken has proved,it makes it much easier to win when you are 2 and 3 deep in each wt class,no discredit to the wrestlers either, but they do and always will have a much better pool of kids to choose from, most having and going there for the Athletic programs to prepare them for thier college careers or thier hopes and dreams of furthering thier athletic as well as academic careers, not all kids are afforded that opportunity. But with credit to the public schools,we still come along and win with pure heart and soul as is proven from yr to yr,look at basketball rankings this yr and other sports. But at any rate, each and every Wrestler from Hendricken that stepped on that mat has by far earned that spot and although wrestling is a team sport it is as much individual ,as the States will prove, the public schools would be lost without schools like Hendricken to step up our own challenges, great Job Hendricken for your success, but as always....Way to go PANTHERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Coventry, back in the day also had one of the first and still successful feeder programs, lots of the other public schools were not even introduced to wrestling until entering HS...I also believe you will see Coventry rise again in the near future...

Coventry has one of the most knowledgable coaches in the state. Coach Charlie helps his kids actually any wrestler year round. I can see them doing very well. People like to speculate about the successes of some coaches but the bottom line is that all these coaches that continually have top teams are great coaches. I personally like to look at what successful coaches are doing and try to emulate it into our programs at MQ. At the end of the state tournament we are all on the same team.

Serge I agree, As a long time youth coach and a first year HS coach I try to learn from every practice room I walk into. Good coaches dont claim to know everything they keep learning and defer to another coach in the room when they dont have an answer. They drag the best out of every wrestler in the room. They are disciplined, humble, confident and compassionate. They dont just bulid a team, they build programs with support from their respective schools, and communities. I for one cant wait for States this weekend. I am anxious to see where we stack up because I am confident in the lessons we have taught and the hard work we have put in. Good luck to everyone, lets make some noise for these kids this weekend.

just throwing this out there. Some of the toughest kids ive met wrestle for hendricken. their practices are like no other highschool in the state, their coaches push them harder than any other team ive seen in rhode island and on top of those things, they have one of the toughest academics atmospheres in the state. Hendricken is not going to be touched this year. Go BH and congrats to the coaches and wrestlers for the D1 title!
