Anyone who will be attending the University of Rhode Island next year and is interested in participating on the Wrestling Team please let me know. The team competes throughout New England and the Mid Atlantic as well as wrestling various duals. Unfortunately due to lack of interest and poor funding the team is on the verge of being dropped. I have one week to get a list of names together of possible wrestlers before the University votes on whether to drop the team or not. So if you are going to be attending URI or know any other wrestlers who are provide me with names and a good way to get in touch with you. Lets keep the team alive.

I have two student-athletes that attend there now who may be interested. Carlos Perez and Marcelo Lopez. I remember they wanted to wrestle in college, but URI only had a club team at the time, will there be any coaching or team competitions they may partake? Will this be the rise of URI Wrestling?

If we are able to get the green light for next year there should be duals and tournaments throughout New England, New York, and most likely PA. The league is very competitive and we wrestle some D3 schools as wells as the military prep academy's, most notably Navy Prep who feeds directly into the Navy D1 program.

Alright, sounds good, I know some of my seniors now are deciding on going there for next year, they never really gave wrestling at URI a thought only because it wasn't offered, but I'll let them know. Thanks.

I'll be meeting with the Director of Club Sports tomorrow to discuss keeping the team around. Lets get some names out here so I can show him that people are interested. Even if your not going to URI, throw your name down to show your support for RI wrestling.

Best in your search for URI wrestlers.. Beyond your immediate need..Have you considered looking into previous URI Grad's that wrestled at URI in years previous.. See if any of those former grads would consider supporting your efforts with $$.. or influence within the administration?

This may be a little out there, but I think it may be worth a shot given the circumstances. Try contacting Carl Adams as he was the coach of the team when it was cut. Tell him in an email for example that you are the leader of the club team that might be cut, and you're looking for URI wrestling alumni who may be willing to help. He may have stayed in touch with some of them or know of their whereabouts. Explain just how significant wrestling is at URI currently, just how far the NCWA has come in dual meet competitions, regional tournaments, conference tournaments, and national tournaments. URI wrestles teams like UConn with multiple CT and MA state champs, and URI in the recent past has had NCWA nationally ranked wrestlers, like Perry Raso. He may have been an all-american in the NCWA nationals, but I'm not sure. It is worth a shot.
