I think we can all agree that RI has plenty of talented athletes, some of who can possibly be recruited by D1 colleges if the culture was different. With that being said we are at a disadvantage in many ways as far as being recruited no matter the sport. For one RI is the smallest state in the country. You don’t hear of many athletes being recruited from RI period. This is simply because we do not have an athletic culture like other states. You go to a Texas higshchool football game there sold out stadiums, go to a NJ, PA wrestling match the stands are full. Other states breed these athletic cultures and lifestyles. As far as wrestling goes. If our kids want to be recruited we have to do more and get them involved with the big name tournaments. They need to be exposed to the mass population build some talk stock in their names and just compete with the best. Staying local won’t get us anywhere. We need to have more kids competing on a higher level. As they compete with big name guy or at tournaments and get wins at these tournaments they will begin to get noticed. The more kids begin to do this the more attention it will bring the state. Until we can build a competitive wrestling culture you will only see minimal guys being recruited. I will say I think we are on the right path. I can say since I’ve been in wrestling we have grown as a state. Before winning states was like nationals and NEs was like Olympics the bar was set low because we didn’t know better. I think it’s clear now that we must raise that bar if we expect to grow into a state that can be looked into for recruiting.

If score spread is so important to determine talent, why did Connor McGonagle only win 1-0 versus two unranked opponents? I mean McGonagle just won his 3rd New England’s and is ranked #5 in the nation at 132 on Flo and #6 on Intermat. Two 1-0 matches in a row against unranked opponents? He can’t be any good... [Magnanimous Logic]. 😕. #dummy PS: McGonagle repeated 8th grade before he transferred to Timberlane, so guess how old that makes him? 😭 well, do you know when his birthday is? If it's in the summer, it means he'll only be turning 19 this year, after his senior year ends.

Just reading through some of these posts, I’m not sure how people are stating some of these things , and where they got their information from. I know quite a few of the kids being discussed and their parents well and haven’t heard some of these things: - As of last Sat while talking with his dad, Ryan Garlitz was looking at Maryland and a few other D1 schools.. D3 schools weren’t mentioned. - Closeness of scores doesn’t necessarily translate to anything in wrestling other than sometimes kids are a tough match up for other kids because of their style, body type, length, etc. Connor McGonagle, according to the newspaper in his area said he had a fever over 102 on Thursday night, so wasn’t at his best but powered through the weekend. That being said, his match over Jack Darling at Lowell was only 3-0.. Darling is a lengthy kid that typically stays in good position and doesn’t give up many points to anyone. - Only rankings I’ve seen done by the 3 Wrestling organizations that don’t allow submitted information: Intermat, TheOpenMat, Flo, only go up to 20 kids in each way class, not sure which one ranked Darling 25th.. but if USA wrestling mag, they rely heavily on information submitted, they ask local coaches/clubs for input and claim it’s Based on local and national tourneys as well as all 3 styles, etc... but have seen past kids from Ma ranked as high as 17th and they never competed in anything but folkstyle.. - I’m not a fan of Darling, but stories in his local papers claim he was being recruited.. granted that could mean anything, but how someone could possibly know he isn’t receiving any $ for athletics is beyond me.. The family doesn’t seem like the type to divulge that info if so. Maybe I’m wrong. - Fine is a sophomore and most likely will go up 2-3 wt classes at minimum before he graduates, based on his build / height now. He will get thicker with age, and if he can continue his style as he gets heavier and stronger, it will only benefit him - Not sure on the dig on Fallon in regards to repeating and BH.. when he was in 8th grade, had no idea he was going to end up at BH. Also concerning injuries, I think most are aware he was injured at LaSalle when paired up with their heavyweight for whatever reason. The type of injury he sustained most likely wouldn’t have happened in a normal wrestling season wrestling kids anywhere close to his own body weight . Also when he wrestled as an 8th grader in HS in MA, it was on a waiver as the school didn’t have any HS kids at his weight. Won’t affect his eligibility next year. - SEM and Blair will allow anyone to join the wrestling program, if you can afford whatever deal they can come up with based on financial needs of the family..contrary to some rumors, no one goes to either school for free. However breaking into that lineup is extremely tough, except maybe at heavy weight.. because many of the big kids decide on college football and won’t risk an injury wrestling. Most schools face the same heavyweight problem - Many kids can get a lot better between 9th grade and HS graduation, and then even improve even much more when they get to college, if they have the correct coach, program, and support for them. So much depends on their desire and work ethic...just as there are plenty of kids who started off as studs in youth and everyone was positive they would be off to college on an athletic scholarship and then “life” gets in the way. As long as the kids want to get better and put in the time, scores and outcomes really aren’t that important to every college coach.

As long as the kids want to get better and put in the time, scores and outcomes really aren’t that important to every college coach. As I do agree with some of your points the argument was not if kids could go to D1 schools but rather, if they are being recruited and or offered scholarships for their talents. I understand you talked with Garlitz parents and “he was looking at Maryland and other D1 schools” the key words there are he was looking at them. Although I do agree if there were offers I would doubt families would disclose the amount. At the end of the day it is all he say she say. And as of right now the facts are, there aren’t any RI D1 wrestlers other than Jarrel. Who also was not recruited to my recollection. As stated before, we will only begin to get recruited by big D1 programs when we are competing at prestige tournaments with high level guys. If you can get some wins at tournaments with ranked kids you will get noticed, but it needs to become a culture in order for schools to want to recruit our area. It starts with putting the kids in the right positions and opportunities to create a culture of wrestling. I think we are on the right path but still got a little ways to go.

My 2 cents, I do not wish by any means to disparage anyone, the truth is there are kids who are currently wrestling in RI that could wrestle D1 and there are kids coming up that might in the future, I think RI is going to produce some great wrestlers over the next five years, but none as they are currently except maybe Grifka and Fry would be heavily recruited at this stage and why you ask? College coaches don’t look at where you place at NE’s that is certainly considered but the real question is the overall body of work, athletic ability, work ethic and most importantly who have you beat! A true D1 wrestler destined for success@ NE's Jack! Clarke’s win against Darling was impressive and 132 was deep, Check for Clark, but Darling is not nationally ranked and he was accepted at VT and will walk on an wrestle, he is not getting scholarship money. What did Darling do at Fargo, Super 32 etc… But Clarke has real potential to go to a DI program and a lot of upside! Fallon is good, the one thing coaches will notice about him, he is a winner and finds a way to win, but for being an 18 year old who turns 19 next year he should have killed Joyce (15) and at NE’s he beat one quality kid in Leete(15) in OT and Leete is at best a high DIII recruit at this point, he has a win @106 against Guida, but that would not be the case today! He also has what seems to be lingering injuries and D1 tends to gobble those kids up, hard to stay healthy against monsters!!! I love Fine he is a competitor, and he is young but as of now if I were a D1 coach looking at strength, potential, and athleticism I would take Faria all day that kid with D1 coaches could take off, Fine’s game of funk and rolling around would not translate to D1 against much stronger and more athletic kids who quite honestly funk at a different level by the way 0-2 at Super 32 this past Fall! But does have quality wins this year against good comp! Fry on the other hand has wrestled well in quality tourney’s yes 106 at NE’s was weak, but he can only wrestle who is in front of him, one match away from placing at Fargo, 4-2 at Super 32, Athletic as hell, I think he can wrestle D1 all day if he puts on size! Grifka on the other hand will go D1 and be heavily recruited, why cuz he is big and can move for his size and will only get better a projected 184 or 197 in college and Sem and Blair will be calling soon, count on it!!!!! I also think once they mature Zarella (14), Joyce (15), will only get better and have a chance to wrestle in college but only time and hours spent in the room will tell! RI wrestling is getting better, but let's see how these kids do in the fall before we start saying they are all going to wrestle D1! Lastly I wish all these wrestlers well! Ebed Jarrell was not a great high school wrestler but is now a nationally rank D1 wrestler, why because he works so hard and is 100% dedicated and the truth is all the above could accomplish even more than Jarrell if they put in the work! Okay so everyone can say what they want but since when does age matter in high school and it’s quite strange you say these other kids are more D1 ready than Fallon and Fine, as out of the very few NHSCA All Americans Rhode Island has produced, these wrestlers are 2 of them and the only 2 still currently in high school, both with at least 1 year of competition left

Having the New England’s on Flo helps..but most likely unless someone was able to knock off either McGonagle or Ryan Jack last weekend, most wouldn’t know how to gauge how well someone can wrestle, since the competition wasn’t known. I think BH going to NY, and any other NE schools that venture out of the area, atleast gives the opportunity to face ranked opponents. Timberlane goes to Beast of the East Tournament, which helped McGonagle get recognition, but can never guarantee that you will have a high quality bracket at any tournament. Kids have to do the well known offseason tournaments as well. Even though my son competed/placed at Fargo, I don’t necessarily agree Freestyle translates to doing well in college wrestling, however there are way more college coaches watching that tournament in person than at say Disney Duals, and the other “fun” tournament locations.

It is simply amazing that you know so much about what exactly D1 coaches are looking for, and who gets money and who doesn’t. There are several D1 wrestlers right now from RI so I’m not sure how you can Ebed is the only one. There are a handful of RI kids at Sacred Heart, Lynch and the Labries are at Brown, and Devin Rivet is at Campbell. I’m sure I am missing some. Now who got money and who didn’t NONE of us know.

I do believe I said to my recollection. I did forget about those guys when on the subject, but if your from RI or part of RI wrestling you know why those kids are where they are. Not taking anything away from the kids. All of them are outstanding wrestlers and earned all their accolades and respect. Sacred Heart will be a “recruiting” school because of Clark’s ties to RI wrestling. The 2 kids that go there are Seth Brown and Jacob Harrison. Neither of them ever all-American or even won NEs. Harrison almost lost to the kid from Woonsocket in the finals, who to my knowledge never even placed at states before that year . Seth placed 5th at NEs. Lynch is a smart kid who also had ties to brown being from RI and being coached by Dave Amatto (ex Brown coach) and Clark who both ran clubs out of Brown. Hats off to all of them for being part of D1 wrestling especially Rivet at Campbell as from my knowledge was not because of networking or ties to the school. We have to keep in mind he did all American which would prove my point more. If your competing against and winning against high level guys you will get noticed. I have no doubt our guys are capable but we as a state are not on that level just yet. As for now out best bets for D1 recruitment is Brown and Sacred Heart. I know ppl don’t want to hear it but it’s the truth.

My point is there are a lot of D1 schools and there are also quite a few wrestlers that could wrestle D1. No obviously not on Penn state, Ohio state level but at a D1 school. In the long run it’s the education that they will receive that will set up their future. I’m not here to argue I just hate seeing all of our kids hard work be minimized and lessened. My hope is that all these kids go to VA beach in 3 weeks and do make the podium and All american to put us on the map even more. P.S. Seth did all American his sophomore year at VA beach.

This topic is a gauge and reality. If we want our kids to be some of the best kids in the country (which we all do) we need to do more and set the bar higher. A new standard. We need to become a wrestling culture. Like said in previous post. We are on the right path. Keep pushing

Whew someone feathers got ruffled, the last three posts, same person, I think your taking this a little to personally, in most RI and NE wrestling circles Fallon has been considered the #1 p4p wrestler, I think magnanimous was making the simple point that, most people felt if Fallon was a true D1 prospect he would have been more dominant against younger up and coming talent, especially since he is a redshirt junior ( yes the irony of this whole thing is wizardry10 keeps saying age doesn't matter but Fallon repeated eight grade, I guess his big boy pants didn't fit so he he had to stay back a year, till they did, typical of Hendricken Hawk the rules only apply to everyone else, they can repeat, because to them repeating isn't cheating! Magnanimous even says Jack is a true D1 talent at the beginning of his post, Jack was utterly dominant throughout the entire NE tourney! It is also ironic that Wizadry10 keeps referring to age and margin of victory, your emotion is blinding your reasoning, first you say it doesn't matter and should not be considered but then refer to both when you say like Garlitz is 19 and only beat Fine by 2? Your further making his point that age does seem to matter and that close margins indicate a lack of dominance, in addition people are saying Fine is D1 ready now, yet Garlitz is going DIII! HMMM I think Fallon and Fine are great wrestlers, and both could and should make it to DI but magnanimous has some valid pts! in asking if they are D1 ready now, that was the debate! for the last three pages! By the way is Fallon eligible to wrestle in RI next year he has already wrestled 8 consecutive semesters in high school competition? An injury year doesn't count Your entire statement has been ruined by you saying Fallon’s “big boy pants” didn’t fit grow up, and btw Garlitz is undecided and has D1 offers
