On Jan. 31. I think it's their third Concord Capitol tourney win in a row. Pretty impressive with 9 finalists, and champs DiMauro, Sauro, and maybe DiSano? No brackets and the below poster from the NHwrestling.com site was unclear. Every Hawk placed top five except heavyweight, including Lanni filling in at 132. Nick Celico and Potter losses could be considered upsets, but Zach O'Connor was a surprise finalist at 220. Hawks over a tough Noble (Maine) team and host Concord, NH.
Concord Capitol City Classic Results - 1/31/15
Some excellent wrestling today at Concord. Congrats to a well-coached, deep Bishop Hendricken, RI team that must have run away with the team totals, having 9 wrestlers in the Finals and several other placewinners! BH may make some team noise at NEs, as I expect they'll take several of their team there, much as Mt. Anthony does every year. The BH guys are all quite technical as well as being tough: they all run great tilts.
Also competing from out-of-state were Noble, ME and Champlain Valley Union, VT.
[Team score update: 1st BH, 2nd Noble, 3rd Concord]
Here are some unofficial results and observations, starting around midday: (Finals began at 152 lbs.)
106 (11 entries)
1st Sam Cavallaro (WND #1 Seed) F4:47 Mark Hoyt (CON #2 Seed)
3rd Cam Nappi (BH) 13-0 maj dec Jac St. Jean (GOF #4)
5th Cam McClure (ALV #6) pinned Garrett Patten (WSQ #3) *also won 6-3 earlier
113 (12 entries)
1st Shayne McCann (PNK #2) 4-3 dec Nick Celico (BH #1) *One of best Finals bouts!
3rd Ben Widmann (JS #3) 7-4 dec Peter Caron (WND #4) *Caron 9-4 over Mulleavey (WSQ) in qtrs.
5th Hil Keisker (NOB) pinned Savannah Eliza (HB)
*McCann is very tough and just appeared stronger than Widmann (down from 120) in semis, beating him 4-1. He got first T2 on Celico in Finals, went down in 2nd and got R2, then coasted rest of the way giving up a couple E1s and a stalling pt. Both these guys should factor into NEs. Widmann hoping to get there at 113 now. If both Tristan Stetson (Keene) and he go down to 113, that weight becomes just as tough as 120.
120 (16 entries)
1st Austin Shorey (NOB #1, G10) 10-0 maj dec Taylor Thyne (ALV #2, G12)
3rd Devin Rivet (BH #5) 4-2 OT/SV Liam Hayden (WM #4) Rivet won 6-3 over Hayden earlier
5th Jarett Legg (CVU #3) over Garrett Klausner (HB #6)
*Shorey is just so active and quick; very strong tilts, too. Thyne never got a chance to breathe. In Semis Rivet pushed Shorey in a 5-1 loss: Rivet is lightning quick himself and scored a T2 in OT countering Hayden's shot for the OT win.
126 (17 entries)
1st NOT SURE because Dylan Disano (BH #5) vs. Jake Nault (GOF #3) did not happen . . .
*somebody must have injury defaulted, but I didn't hear which way it went. Disano 7-2 dec over Ben Dow (BED #1) in semis; Nault 12-2 maj dec Eric Daigle (PNK #7) in other semi.
3rd Jake Martel (NOB #6) 7-4 dec Eric Daigle (PNK #7)
5th Brandon Simpson (CON #8) forfeit over Ben Dow (BED #1)
132 (14 entries)
1st Alex Kamau (CON #2) 2-0 dec Nick Widmann (JS #1)
3rd Ethan Lavalle (BED #6) pinned Nathaniel Lindsay (HB #3) *might change rankings
5th Anthony Lanni (BH) 13-5 maj dec Devin Dutrisac (NOB)
*Kamau put up a very physical battle vs. Widmann and worked the edge very well; neither guy could score through two periods. Widmann was almost able to ride out Kamau in the 3rd, but with short time left worked a reversal to go up 2-0. As time expired Widmann appeared to have reversed again, but the ref said not quite enough control to call it. Tough call either way! If Widmann had cut Kamau much earlier in the 3rd, perhaps he could have won 2-1 with a T2, but to Kamau's credit he never conceded anything on his feet to Nick. Should be interesting at MOCs!
138 (14 entries)
1st Connor Bourque (GOF #1) 14-5 or so maj dec Matt Jacobsen (BH #2) *Dominant!
3rd Brendan Mooney (BOW #5) 3-2 dec (?) Devin Borque (NOB #3) *Not sure who won
5th Cooper Bolduc (CVU) 13-11 OT/SV Chris Comeau (PLY)
*Connor Bourque with the nice Turk ride!
145 (11 entries)
1st Otto Keisker (NOB #1) 10-2 maj dec John Arruda (BH #2)
3rd Chris Munnell (CON #3) pinned Ben Francoeur (GOF #4)
5th Nick McPherson (HB #5) over Kyle Newman (MER) I think.
*In semis Arruda just manhandled Munnell: up 10-0 after 1st, looking very tough & technical. Later he hit a nice Peterson to add up more score before pinnng Munnell in 3:01. Arruda looked like a totally different wrestler in Finals vs. Keisker who is so unassuming and deceptively tough; he completely dismanted Arruda in Finals! Don't underestimate Keisker! In fact, all the Noble wrestlers are trained by Coach Kip DeVoll to battle you until the last second. Several boys during the day experienced the Maine diet Head-'n-Arm throw from the losing position looking up at the lights!
152 (14 entries) *Several bouts that will affect NH Rankings
1st Anthony DiMauro (BH #1) 8-5 dec David Waterbury (PLY #2)
3rd Calgary Mackenzie (CON #4) 6-3 dec Christian Lopez (HB #3) *Lopez 11-4 dec Troy Peters (WND)
5th Troy Bergeron (CVU) pinned Kasey Rogers (NOB)
*DiMauro was pushed to a 5-3 OT2 win over Mackenzie in semis; Waterbury 8-7 dec over Lopez, so a competitive bracket. In Finals DiMauro with first T2, but then R2 by Waterbury and E1 made it 3-2 after first. Waterbury chose down and got his own R2 to pull ahead 4-3, but then DiMauro with his own Peterson R2 to close the period leading 5-4. In third DiMauro goes down and gets E1, then T2 giving up a late E1 to win 8-5. Good bout! The Peterson is an underutilized move.
Waterbury showed a nice ankle pick and a couple very nice switches during the day.
160 (14 entries: most competitive weight)
1st Tyler Wilson (PNK #5) 5-1 dec Mitchell McMahon (MER #7)
3rd Lewis Stewart (BH #1) pinned Dan Lawrence (CON #3)
5th Fran Gesel (WM #2) 13-1 maj dec Bailey Alton (WND)
*Great bout between Wilson and Stewart in semis with Wilson winning 6-4! He hit a nice Fireman's Carry in that bout for the first T2, I think. He took Stewart down 3x. He majored Tom Hamel (PLY) and Christian Duquette (WSQ) earlier. McMahon beat Justin Mello (BED) 8-2, then Fran Gesel 7-6 in qtrs, and Dan Lawrence 9-8 to reach Finals. McMahon has a nice blase double. Lawrence won 2-1 over Andrew Butler (HB #6) in qtrs.
170 (15 entries; another competitive weight)
1st Richie Mills (WSQ #1) tech fall Steve Johnson (BH #7) *Mills 3x Classic Champ!
3rd Ian Wagner (CON #2) pinned Ben Miller (BED #3)
5th Wyatt Farwell (HB #4) 6-1 dec (?) Ian Routhier (GOF #5)
*Mills is moving really well and beat Farwell 11-4 in semis; below him it was anybody's guess. Johnson upset Wagner 6-5 in qtrs, and then beat Miller 7-2 in semis.
182 (10 entries)
1st James Sauro (BH #5) 3-1 OT/SV George Tarwo (CON #3)
3rd Evan Manning (ALV #2) 7-0 dec Jamal Durrani (NOB #7)
5th Jon Ferri (WND #4) over Kienan Kittredge (CVU #1)
*Both Sauro and Tarwo can really move: all either could manage was an E1 from bottom late in each period. Sauro finally got in deep enough to lift Tarwo's feet off the mat and finish a T2 in OT for the win. Good match!
195 (11 entries)
1st Dylan Barreiro (PNK #1) 11-3 maj dec Nick Martino (BH #3)
3rd Kayne Robert (HB #4) 4-3 dec Ryan Belz (BED #5)
5th Robert Worrell (NOB #2) pinned Mitch Comeau (CON #6)
*Barreiro is on a mission heading for the top step at NEs: that is his goal. He's as quick as anyone, a bit stronger than his opponents, and more determined. He can ramp up when he wants to and be absolutely relentless! He tech falled Robert in semis and Marino majored Worrell.
220 (13 entries)
1st Zach Schluntz (NOB #3) pinned Zack O'Conner (BH unseeded)
3rd Joey Lydick (PNK #1) pinned Clement Sherwood (HB) *also in qtrs
5th Zach Feudner (JS #4) forfeit over Aaron Evans (PLY #2) *might have suffered concussion in consi semis being run into wall by Sherwood
*O'Conner won 3-1 OT/SV over Lydick in semis; Schluntz pinned Evans.
285 (13 entries)
1st Bobby Heald (BED #1) pinned Patrick Hume (WND #2)
3rd Deene Hill (PNK #3) 10-4 dec Eric Pilcher (NOB)
5th Tyshawn Roberts (CON #4) pinned Calvin Hayford (CVU #8)
*Heald took a 2-0 late lead in 1st; Hume chose down in 2nd, but eventually Heald turned him for the pin. Looking good!
Not sure who got OW, but I would have voted either for Tyler Wilson (PNK 160) or Shayne McCann (PNK 113). Austin Shorey (NOB 120) deserves notice as well. Mills and Barreiro were both dominant! Maybe Sauro (BH 182) . . .
Lots of great bouts!
